How does Guerra have a 2.80 ERA?

He's a great example of the folly of looking at single-season/small sample reliever ERA. Last year he struck out 21.8% and walked 10.9%. This year he's struck out 21.7% and walked 10.5%. Last year his ERA was 6.75. This year 2.80.

Essentially all that happened after he came up different to earlier in the season was a little BABIP correction. F*ck superior baseball IQ if it comes with hitting .190/.270/.278 instead of .250/.318/.363. Or their career lines of .219/.294/.327 versus .269/.332/.399.

Ah yes Danks and his extremely large sample size of 306 ABs. You have to remember De Aza is a notoriously streaky hitter. He was awful when he was getting limited At bats. Then with the injury to Garcia he got his ABs and as he usually does later, caught fire. Now if you want to argue that's why we need him when a guy like Eaton goes on his annual 10 DL trips, then fine, I can see your point. I don't wanna label him as injury prone just yet. The dumb plays that cost his team an inning or runs.. that stuff doesn't show up.

Tyler's "Magic Glasses Phase" will be the only thing keeping his average above .215 by season's end. And as I type this, he singles.

He really turned on that pitch. He's not a good hitter, but his streaks make him an interesting hitter. I wonder if he'll ever make it in the league. John Buck lasted a long time and he can't hit.

Why does Hawk think Sanchez looks like Ordonez? He looks more like Avi with the air let out.

Good line. I love Sanchez's lively bat on that base hit.

--Hilarious how quiet it is at the Cell. Amazing how some sports (football and hockey; Bears n Hawks) the fans make noise but baseball it's like a library.

Nice play by Conor there.

It's not a large sample-size, but it's not nothing either. That coupled with just looking at how long and slow his swing is would leave me extremely hesitant to dump a relatively productive player for him. And for the thousandth time, that stuff basically all shows up, and even with that stuff, De Aza has been productive.

was thinking the same thing greg it's a f***ing morgue in there tonight. Must be hard for the players to play out the string I get they are professionals but for a guy like Alexei he's seen this s*** before. Just hope the kids add some energy over the next month.

Are you guys arguing that Jordan Danks should play over De Aza or be kept over him? Haha. Jordan Danks. Only way Danks bat would play is if he's like +20 runs in CF. Then you could move Eaton to LF to keep him healthy but that's just crazy talk.

For the record, I'm not saying Danks is the answer either. I'm tired of both guys actually. But I still don't think we've seen enough of Danks and I still prefer his defense.. just with a better hitter on top of it.

Yes, but as a 4th OF, not a starter. We're not that crazy. It's basically because he makes less money, is a more consistent hitter, and a much better fielder.

For the record, now 6 for his last 46. Under .200 since April.

Well yea I agree. As a 4th OF I'd take Danks just because he's going to cost about 1/4 of De Aza and he can play CF. But I'm not entirely convinced a better LF than De Aza is needed next year. Team has bigger holes IMO.

Gillaspie looked dead on that at bat. Like Hawk said, the hook is the big equalizer. Whiff.

(this lefty/righty stuff is one of the reasons baseball has become boring to many; so many specialist pitchers. Ridiculous)

Hooooboy.

Also, I'm not sure he's as good a fielder as some seem to think, and De Aza is not as bad as some seem to think too. Certainly it doesn't come close to making up the difference between the bats.

The only consistent thing about JorDanks hitting is that he's not good. He has significant holes in his swing.
