Given that price tag, the Sox either feel they have their money committed elsewhere more appropriately right now or they really did not like what they saw from Tomas. That is a seemingly incredibly reasonable price tag.

Oh I don't know about that. Just imagine giving Tank that kind of contract.

@susanslusser: I am hearing rumblings that the #Athletics are close to a fairly significant deal that involves Jeff Samardzija.

Says they're getting ML hitters back. Viciedo? Fingers crossed.

Deal as in trade, or deal as in contract?

Trade

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics are close to a "very significant deal" involving Jeff Samardzija.

Slusser notes that the team would receive several pieces back in return, and that the A's are targeting hitters. The 29-year-old right-hander, who is set to hit free agency after the 2015 season, posted a terrific 2.99 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 202/43 K/BB ratio over 219 2/3 innings with the A's and Cubs in 2014. Stay tuned.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the potential trade that the Athletics are working on does not include right-hander Jeff Samardzija.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the A's are close to what was called a "very significant deal" and that Jeff Samardzija was likely to be included. They do appear to be on the verge of something significant though and are expected to receive multiple players back in return. Stay tuned as this story continue to evolve.

Beane is going to rebuild the A's in one offseason while simultaneously going all in on 2014. Samardizja is an asset he can sell now for the right price or flip at the deadline to a desperate buyer. Lester helped in in 2014 a lot more than Cespedes and since he was punting 2015 anyways he didn't care about the extra year Cespedes had of team control. Now he's stocking up the talent with Lowrie, 4 years younger than Donaldson, and a collection of prospects he can sell this time next year to assist rebuilding the big league club overnight.

Not to mention the A's still have a ton of pitching.

Feels like a fair deal for Donaldsons "Baseball card stats", but when you throw WAR into account and the fact that he's calculated the 3rd most WAR the past 2 years it looks like the A's should have gotten more than the Jays #8 and #13 prospect, an overratted and oft injured Lawrie, and what looks like a real good SP but has only done so in 1 year.

REal puzzling deal for the A's IMO.

maybe that is the best they were going to get. i think the ss was the key to the

trade. that pitcher isn't bad either.

People fawn over these veteran hitters, but the As got a pretty good and very young 3B ( if he can stay on the field), a 4/5 starter that they can probably make look like a 3 in their ballpark (it's happened many times before) and a very good SS prospect. Not the greatest return in the world, but not bad either.

You can also imagine Viciedo hitting better and being a more athletic and better defender. If he were, he'd easily get a deal like this. I don't think this is that bad of a deal.

Why exactly did the A's have to trade this guy if the return "Isn't bad"?

Now I'm actually annoyed that we couldn't put together a package for Donaldson.
