I thought i remembered that voiding it was a lot more complicated, and the Union didnt want to go down that road(ie. didnt want ARod to be an example that other teams would follow in a similar situation), so the Yankees were "dissuaded"

Maybe a "back room" deal for Aroid dropping his lawsuit against the Yankees.

More like "We dont want to create a precedent for teams that want to get out from under large contracts when a player tests positive"

But the Yankees would have wanted that anyway and a court finding that would have been a huge boon to the owners, so why would the Steins give up that fight? Because ARoid also dropped his lawsuit. Fair trade.

Hardy back with the O's at 3 years 40 million.

O's also trying to reach an extension with Nelson Cruz.

I have to wonder how long Hardy's has until his defense deteriorates. He hasn't exactly been a great hitter the past three years.

$13 million a year to a 3 WAR shortstop is a no-brainer in this market, but you have to wonder how long Hardy can sustain that production.

MORE REASONS JAMES SHIELDS IS A GONER....

Kyle Zimmer, should he ever stay healthy for more than a half-season, has No. 1-No. 2 starter upside with athleticism, command and a double-plus fastball-curveball combination.

Sean Manaea took some time to adjust to professional baseball, let alone at the High-A level, but the left-hander eventually found his groove en route to posting gaudy strikeout numbers.

On the other end of the spectrum is 21-year-old Christian Binford, whose plus command helped him climb to Triple-A and has him knocking on the big league door headed into 2015.

from bleacherreport.com

They join Liam Hendriks and Lamb on the outside looking in...with the strong probability Aaron Crow (good buy low candidate for the White Sox) and Luke Hochevar (another "kick the tires" guy if healthy) will both be gone. The Royals might also look to Crow as a starter, although they have plenty of depth in that area.

Three lefties and two righties...pretty good balance, and a very cost-effective rotation at that.

1.Duffy

2.Ventura

3.Finnegan

4.Vargas

5.Guthrie

6.Hendriks

7.Zimmer

8.Binford

9.Lamb

10.Manaea

This is also interesting. The Dodgers are looking to dump about $50 million in payroll this year.

Mike Petriello ‏@mike_petriello

Yes, I heard a report that LAD payroll would be ~$190m next year. No, it doesn't seem remotely possible. They're at that now, before arb.

That's a lot of moving pieces. I wonder...

The further into the playoffs KC goes, the more pressure there will be for the Royals to re-sign Shields.

While I agree, this also isn't like the NFL where you're pretty much forced to re-sign a player like that (as was the case with Flacco in Baltimore). If he prices himself out of their range, they'll just have to let him go.

See Albert Pujols/StL.

Luckily he forced their hand in the PR battle, and the fanbase (mostly) was relieved.

At any rate, Shields is reaching the point with one more bad start in the post-season where they'd have to remove him from the #1 spot in the rotation for the World Series.

The problem is that Ventura's now a little ouchy/iffy...and there's no way you lead off with Guthrie or Vargas. That leaves Duffy, and it seems there are legit concerns about letting him start due to that injury from September, although why they're leaving him on the post-season roster in that scenario makes almost no sense. Maybe they think the value of including him on the roster is worth it, even if he's the last pitcher out of the pen. Strange situation. A bit like Shelby Miller last year with the Cards.

After a run like this, if they can't bring back Shields, they will have to make a real effort to replace him.

Linking this about Melky Cabrera, the interesting part being this..

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/10/free...ky-cabrera.html

A benign spinal tumor was learned to be a significant factor in Melky Cabrera‘s disappointing 2013 campaign, and the switch-hitter regained his form in 2014 as he prepared to hit the open market for the second time in his big league career.
