here is the same question i asked before.

if the skills are there, would you sign him, if the upside is a tick lower than Jose A????

The supposed upside is even higher than Abreu because of his speed and fielding ability...more like a cross between A-Rod (at 19-20, not post-steroids form) and Robinson Cano.

Yeah, the upside is "best player in the game" because he can supposedly handle SS at least for a while, and could move to 3B if he gets big.

But he's a prospect. This is the type of thing the Dodgers can afford, but there's really no chance we'll get involved.

‏@JeffPassan Breaking: Yoan Moncada is a free agent after MLB changes its rules regarding Cuban players. Story with details soon on Yahoo Sports.

So if he's a free agent, are there still penalties in signing him over your bonus pool? Or is he like a regular MLB free agent now?

Sorry I'm confused.

Yes, there are still penalties as he fits the MLB definition of a young international free agent for the purposes of the international signings caps.

Micker Adolfo Zapata was a free agent as well when he signed too. If you are a free agent, it just means you can sign with any team and can be employed legally by a US (or Canadian) company.

But because he is under 23 and not a professional for 5 or more years, he is subject to international caps.

Good time to break this out again: Jeff makes the case for the White Sox signing Moncada.

The cost to our major league roster would be disastrous. Even if he were willing to take say $30 million for a bonus, and he was willing to let us pay him over 3 years, the Sox would have to come up with about $30 million in cash within a month of the signing to pay to MLB for the sin tax over going over the cap. Then they would have to find an additional $10 million over each of the next three years for Moncada to pay off his bonus.

If the price is over $30 million, the cost just keeps going up.

I see no scenario where the Sox make that kind of investment especially considering the consensus opinion is that this kid is not ready today to be on a major league roster.

Non-Moncada, but Schwarber being so high on that list is insane.

I heard a lot of people saying that was a huge reach at the #4 pick and now he's ranked the best prospect in the entire draft class? He's an advanced college bat that feasted on younger competition, SMH.

Even still, I can't believe Schwarber is even a top 50 guy, honestly. Yeah, he's got a very polished bat, but he was playing way below his talent level in 2014, and his defense is suspect. He's more than likely a future 1B and we've yet to see his bat against real minor league pitching. He's an extreme helium guy right now.

You guys are majorly underestimating Schwarber. Kid has a better-than-usual chance of being a 30+ HR hitter.

I see no reason why the Sox won't make a push. They have been aggressive in recent years when they see a talent that they like and Hahn has even alluded to the fact that they will consider blowing the draft bucket if the right player comes around. The real question is what are the Sox scouting reports and views on Yoan. If they think he's the goods, they will make an aggressive offer.

I think Keith Law's ranking of #90 is much closer than BA's ranking of him in the top 20. He hasn't even been challenged yet. How often does a college bat who is a mid-1st RD talent get thrown in to the top 20 prospect ranking when he's never played above A-ball? And how many of those guys don't have a position? The only way BA can justify that is if they 100% think he is a future catcher in the majors.

Max Pentecost didn't make the list, and he was ahead of Schwarber on every pre-draft list. Same age. He figures to actually stick at catcher, unlike Schwarber.

DJ Peterson was taken 12th overall in 2013, is still playing 3B, and was ranked #85 by BA the year after he was drafted.

OF Hunter Renfroe was taken 13th overall in 2013, was ranked #80 by BA the year after he was drafted.

OF George Springer was taken 11th overall in 2011, was ranked #59 by BA the year after he was drafted.

OF Michael Choice was taken 10th overall in 2010, was ranked #80 by BA the year after he was drafted.

And like Schwarber, none of those 5 guys made it above A-ball in their first years. The only guy who I could find who played catcher who had a similar high ranking, was Mike Zunino who was ranked #17 the year after he was drafted 3rd overall. Except Zunino STAYED at catcher, that's why he was ranked so well and is still valuable today. The ONLY justification I can see for Schwarber being so high after dominating kids younger than him in A-ball is that BA must think he is a catcher for good and won't end up as an OF. Because as an OF, there is no way they can put Schwarber this high already after not facing any competition yet.

"My goal is to sign with a team soon, start training with them, and make it to the Major Leagues as fast as I can with whichever team that might be," Moncada said in Spanish to MLB.com in his first interview since arriving in the United States in late November. "I know I'm going to do the best I can for as long as I can in this sport."

Moncada, 19, has worked out privately for the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Padres, Giants, Rangers, Rays, Tigers and Brewers. Other teams are expected to join the mix now that Moncada is eligible to sign.

I wish people would realize that everyone is trying to sell something and with that there will be a bias toward the teams that have rabid fan bases.

The Astros and Twins have a better stock of prospects than the cubs in totality.

Years ago this was the Yankees, every year the Yankees would trade their blue chip guy and more times than not they did not pan out.

Remember Felix Pie? Jerome Walton? Gary Scott?

Prospects are just prospects, until they're proven commodities. Baseball history is chock-full with sensational "AAAA-players"; too good for AAA, not good enough for MLB.
