Boopa1219
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 04:03 PM) Ben Badler @BenBadler 15m15 minutes ago Sounds like the Yankees workout will be the last private workout for Yoan Moncada. Expectation among people involved is he signs next week. After their evisceration of the CBA in regards to their INTL, this deal should not be allowed to go through. It shouldn't, but sadly it will.

kageman129
Just got a message on my phone from MLB.com... Per Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com, Yoan agrees to record bonus with Red Sox. Link Edited February 23, 2015 by KG#
NorthSideSox72
Reporting around $30M, Red Sox. Which actually means $60M the team has to pay out.

Eminor3rd
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 09:30 AM) Where does that extra $30 million penalty go to? Bud Selig's pension? An MLB fund designed to funnel the money into administration of international talent acquisition. It's been an interesting point of controversy -- league officials have said that the fund was never designed to be even a fraction of what it's become. Many speculate that the money will be used to implement an international draft ASAP.

They cash the check for $30 million (getting ones), fill the pool, and all the execs at the MLB corporate office go skinny dipping.

It's been an interesting point of controversy -- league officials have said that the fund was never designed to be even a fraction of what it's become. Many speculate that the money will be used to implement an international draft ASAP. So they were surprised that teams were willing to greatly overspend for top talent? Silly. flavum
I wonder if a day is coming where the MLBPA supports American-born players to make scratch like this. Or more likely...Moncada gets thrown in the pool to be drafted just like everyone else.

Moncada could be the straw that breaks the camel's back, because it is actually hurting the MLB players more than minor leaguers and draft hopefuls. caulfield12
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 10:09 AM) Moncada could be the straw that breaks the camel's back, because it is actually hurting the MLB players more than minor leaguers and draft hopefuls. However, there are also political ramifications here at play...US normalizing relations with Cuba, etc. It's not quite so cut-and-dried as Moncada signing is taking away $30 million from James Shields. We haven't seen a player at his age that was this close to major league ready and universally-predicted by be a future superstar...at any rate, the Red Sox have two test cases with Rusney Castillo and now Moncada. Castillo was impressive in his brief call-up last year. Yasmany Tomas with AZ will also be an interesting situation, to see if he can stick at 3B. And, of course, Jorge Soler as well. We'll see soon enough if this is the absolute peak of the Cuban market.

southsider2k5
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 10:30 AM) Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg. Seriously. Moncada has some nice reviews, but there was a decent debate over whether he would have been the first player even taken in the draft. A guy like Strasburg would have destroyed this system. southsider2k5
@ESPNNYYankees To be clear, it's obvious Cashman wanted Moncada but it seems like he couldn't get Hal to go any higher
