Election 2014

title blatantly stolen from The Daily Show

I voted several weeks ago by mail. I think I prefer that to in-person. It gave me time to sit down with the actual ballot and look into the various lower-profile races (county board, forest preserve, judge retention)

Co-posting in both threads:

Nate Silver's final analysis gives the Republicans a 76.2 chance of taking the Senate, with 53 Republican seats (22.5%) and 52 Republican seats (21.4%) being the most likely outcomes. Nate has the Kansas race as the only one without an at least 2:1 favorite.

Here's the Princeton Election Consortium's probabilities:

Overall giving Dems a 35% =/- 15% chance of holding the Senate. One thing that throws a wrench in the probabilities is who the Kansas independent might caucus with if he wins.

The Republican candidate in my congressional district apparently believes that God dictates weather patterns and tornadoes, autism, and dementia are all God's punishments for same-sex marriage and abortion access. Also, gay marriage breeds AIDS. Interesting.

Now, does he actually believe that, or did you hear this from your best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend, who heard it from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night?

I've seen things like this said about various candidates from various parties throughout the years, and almost never does it turn out that they said or believe anything close to what someone claimed, or they took what was said out of context because it suited them.

I only ask because those claims seem beyond extreme on the stupid side.

When I read this the first time, I had to re-read it because for some reason I read this, instead:

15,000 people voted for her in a primary. That is scary.

I wouldn't worry, she's going to get crushed in the general anyway. I'm just amazed the IL GOP couldn't field better (or at least non-psychotic) candidates for that district, which has enough well-off suburbia that it could be a solid pickup opportunity for them.

One reasonable conclusion might be that "psychotic" now = mainstream for that party.

The good thing about this is the GOP will be expected to, like, produce some type of results and IDEAS that aren't from Cantor in the next two years...

What will really irritate them is if they blow it (the coming opportunity) so badly it gets another DEM elected president in 2016.

I remember 1994 like it was yesterday...but that scale/scope of that was much more unexpected than anything that will possibly go down today election-wise.

I think that Schakowsky is very popular and well-liked that she would be tough to beat, and the GOP would rather spend their time and $$$ elsewhere.

I wonder if the Illinois GOP pick the most unwinnable seats and give them to Baar Topinka and Oberweis every two years. Keeps those two feeling important, keeps their money, prevents them from winning office.

Oh bulls***.

Agreed. In fact in Illinois, generally the GOP runs more moderate candidates, i.e. Dold.

Speaking of wing nuts...

She's pretty darn far left, but she isn't living on another planet. I can't vote for someone like Aransas, who simply has no grasp on reality. But I generally plan to vote more red than blue for state level offices because right now that is more what IL needs. I just wish the state GOP would find more reasonable candidates in some races.

I said then and still maintain it... the Gov election between Blago and Baar-Topinka was the worst overall pair of options I've ever seen for a high office. I actually voted 3rd party, which I almost never do.

I do vote Green Party on the Water Reclamation district every time though. Just seems to make sense.

She is an actual Socialist. She said exactly that. I know because I saw her speak at an actual Socialist convention put on labor union leadership years back. Having heard her speak, she has no grasp on reality either. She is a true life wing nut.

You really don't see a difference between "my political views are extreme" nuts and "I actually think the weather changes because of someone's social behavior" nuts? Come on. One is nuts in the political sense, the other is someone who is actually, societally, not dealing with reality.

Some of her views I consider to not be dealing with reality.
