The more and more I look over the list of free agents and their expected price tags the better and better Melky Cabrera looks.

big question can he maintain his hitting to strikeout stats.

He has his whole career . Good OBP guy, won't kill you on defense. To me he's like VMart-lite, switch hitter who hits LH's and RH's pretty equally but since he's not a DH can provide value in the field and for the bench.

and if necessary I would think DH as well.

thanks

#WhiteSox have pursued catchers such as #Astros’ Castro, #Padres’ Grandal in past, but more focused now on RH starter, bullpen help, LH bat.

I feel like Grandal may be the person that Hahn was referring to when he talked about trying to acquire someone he had his eye on for a while at the deadline.

That's what I meant for "and the bench" if we use the 4 good OF's approach for DH we wouldn't have to worry about bench depth. not using pinch runners as much , more speed in the every day lineup and no 1 dimensional ( hit only) guy .

a great point esp if there are a mix of lefty and righty.

has any team ever use the dh as a rotating position ????

Grandal was pulled from the lineup on July 31st last year. I agree he'd make sense. That is also a place where Tank is actually a fit.

1B - LH Yonder Alonso - .240/.285/.397/.682

LF - LH Seth Smith - Had a great year last year but sucks against LHP.

RF - LH Will Venable - .224/.288/.325./613

The thing that is strange about Hahn's comments in that three way trade is he made it seem like that player was a notable type. The only guys that make sense are Grandal and Ackley. I am not enamored but Ackley but would still love trying to add to the young talent with Grandal. Viciedo + an arm for Grandal would make me very happy. The Padres have plenty of reasons to make that trade too. They have underperforming left-handed options in the corner outfield as well as at 1B. Plus, Rene Rivera was the much better catcher for them this year and Austin Hedges has elite defense at the top of the minor league system. Another thing to consider would be the regime change and how none of these players were acquired by the guy at the helm. Whether the Padres have interest in a guy like Viciedo is uncertain, but they do have three potentially starting caliber catchers in Rivera/Grandal/Hedges. Something has to give there.

Yoder Alonso was listed as a non-tender candidate on mlbtr.

Rick Hahn: "While we do have some flexibility ... the bigger and perhaps more important part of that plan is to spend it wisely." #WhiteSox

I'm waiting for the day when a GM says the plan is to spend foolishly.

We'll see what his definition of wise is once the White Sox show their cards.

The Sox did when they didnt resign Thome and went with Kotsay instead. Other teams do it I just don't know which ones. But say we sign Rasmus and Melky and we have Avi and Eaton. That's 2 lefties, a rightie and a switch hitter and since you face mostly RH'ed pitching we 'd have 3 lefties automatically in the lineup , Against lefties Rasmus can sit or Eaton depending one who needs the rest more. Keeps them all fresher ,hopefully more productive .

It would also mean a defensive upgrade and the end of Tank in a Sox uni to the joy of all.

The idea was fine.

The execution - Kotsay - was poor. Ozzie was an incredibly bad evaluator.

Yeah it didn't work because Kotsay isn't an everyday player. No way should he have ever gotten 70-80% of at bats. I thought Andruw Jones did fine though as the right handed part of the platoon.

I would not be surprised if some local writers look in on this site. Its a great way to get some insight to what Sox fans are thinking so writers can turn around and write what the fans want to hear about.

I'm always kind of surprised the quests browsing the forum seem to always outnumber the members whenever I look . Like now even though its late in Chicago 36 people browsing the forum 28 of which are guests.
