Jason Parks on Onelki (from January 2014):

In his 2013 Dodger prospect review, Parks ranked LHP Onelki Garcia seventh, but dropped two spots. In his first full professional season, Garcia made two stops, mostly in Double-A Chattanooga where he started six out of his 25 games and then he went to Albuquerque for 10 more relief appearances. Garcia came up to the Dodgers in September, perhaps as a candidate for postseason play but in his limited three-game appearance, he did not pitch well.

Parks has projected Garcia as a set-up man though he could be a closer, Parks said that while relievers are down-played in the prospect writing world, they are valuable.

"A good solid reliever that you have under team control, man there is a lot a value in that," Parks said. "I think [Garcia] will contribute this year"

Garcia has a two-pitch combo of a low 90s fastball and a solid curveball. Consistency and pitchability are concerns that take him out of the mix as a potential closer but Parks believes "[Garcia] is a major league pitcher."

Onelki Garcia pitched in 1 game between the majors and minors last year. He had elbow surgery in Nov of 2013, but that's all I can find right now.

Also DFA'd Belisario per MLBTR, so that has the 40 man at 36, leaving 4 spots to be protected for the Rule 5.

Unless I'm mistaken, those went to Ravelo, Smith, Saladino, and Montas.

From MLB:

"Used mostly as a reliever in pro ball, Garcia made his big league debut in that role last September. He relies mostly on two pitches: a fastball, which usually arrives at 92-95 mph and seems quicker because he employs a deliberate delivery, and a curveball. Garcia has a hard curve that gets up to 82 mph and elicits swings and misses, and he has a slower mid-70s version that he can get over the plate for strikes.

Garcia also has a raw changeup, but the lack of an effective third offering and spotty control make him a better option in the bullpen rather than the rotation. Garcia had bone chips removed from his elbow in November and he was slower to return then expected."

They ranked him the #17 prospect in the Dodger organization at the end of the season.

Onelki Garcia (Speck) is a very large Cuban lefthander with a very big strikeout fastball. In Cuba's major league (Serie Nacional) in 2009-2010, Garcia made 15 starts and posted a 3.40 ERA with 74 strikeouts in 85 innings. Of course, he also walked 51. Surprisingly subject to the MLB draft after living in legal limbo for a year, he was selected by the Dodgers in round three. Garcia features a 96mph fastball that is occasionally good, but shows little movement and often comes in erratic and flat due to his awkward delivery. His curve tells a similar story, only more emphatically: it's occasionally great, with flashes of true plus movement, but usually mediocre. nobody's seen much of his changeup yet. He only threw two innings at Rancho Cucamonga last season, but in those two innings, he struck out four batters. The Dodgers obviously see something special in Garcia, though, and are expected to break him down before building him back up again, hopefully with some cleaner mechanics.

He is a Cuban ? It's funny a few days ago I was looking over the Dodgers 40 man with regards to Alexei and I did stop on his page to check on him

I don't really understand the Mitchell move. He had a very good 2nd half last year and isn't a proven ML failure. The Sox just chased Michael Taylor for 1 year of his services. They keep such luminaries as DeWayne Wise clone Jordan Danks on the 40 man (the Sox are a sentimental organization). They must just not like the guy.

They still have Jared Mitchell, they just cleared him from the 40-man roster. If I'm understanding correctly, he'll be a minor league free agent after this season if he's not re-added to the 40-man roster. There's still time for Buddy's buddy.

What does it matter? He makes Adam Dunn's contact rate look like Victor Martinez.

Well good; I thought he was at his 5 years (if he wasn't , I'm not sure why he was on the 40 man in the first place).

He is, he reached that in 2012. He sucks, nobody will sign him to anything other than a minor league contract. Since he's familiar with the Sox, he'll probably just stick in Chicago. Classic career minor leaguer that might see a cup of coffee or two in his 26-30 age years.

Theorhetically, someone could claim Mitchell (that is unless they had already waived him and no one claimed him and just now announced that he wasn't on the 40 man.)
