GreenSox
Scherzer would be a poor use of resources. They'd get a lot, lot, lot more marginal value from using that money in other places. Cespedes/Porcello trade was fine. Good to see pitching leave Detroit. Porcello is subject to comp, but he'll never get a QO so that won't matter. Edited December 13, 2014 by GreenSox
Jerksticks
If we signed Sherzer and unloaded some farm for a controllable LF we would probably only need to sign a total of like 2 guys over the next 4 years. Heck we could just get rid of our farm teams altogether and use the extra dough to make a Sox HOV lane on the Ryan.
Bigsoxhurt35
We'd be better off waiting a year if we're adding another top starter Edited December 13, 2014 by Bigsoxhurt35
chitownsportsfan
QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Dec 12, 2014 -> 01:05 PM) If you want to look at it glass half full, Porcello seems like he's been around forever, but he was a top 20 prospect years ago, reached the majors at 20 years old and is only just turning 26. Last year was the first year he finally put up a shiny ERA, but he's been pretty good in FIP and WAR for a few years now. I think he has finally put it together and will be a solid #3 or #2 starter from here on out. And for the record Cespedes is also a free agent at the end of the year for the Tigers. Wilson is the definition of a AAAA reliever, whose ERA is an outlier according to FIP. The other kid they got in the deal wouldn't even see the big leagues for another 4 years or so, if he doesn't fall apart between now and then. I don't think Detroit did bad, but I like the trade better for Red Sox since they struck out on the big names pitchers, but was able to trade from an area of surplus to fill their needs, while getting good value in return. good post. chitownsportsfan
Cespedes isn't some great prize. Especially when you consider that Comerica is gonna knock down that ISO, and as powerful of hitter as he is, he doesn't have elite power and his contact and OBP tools are below average. His OBP last season was .301 FFS. and of course he's a rental that wont' get a qualifying offer most likely. It's a fair trade but Detroit just thinned out their rotation to add 1.5 WAR in LF (they already had the 1 to 2 WAR Davis) when in reality they probably should have just signed Melky and stuck him in LF. That would have cost only money. Detroit is in WIN f***ING NOW MODE. This move doesn't move their needle at all in '15, IMO it moves it back from probably 88 to 86 or 87 wins. The Simon trade moved it back another .5 win. This division is WIDE OPEN! Edited December 13, 2014 by chitownsportsfan
