Chisoxfn
We know Sox had been tied to Upton rumors in the past and I am sure at a minimum, they will be inquiring now. Would think the price in a package deal w/Johnson would be cheaper.
fathom
It's Chris Johnson they're packaging with Upton
thxfrthmmrs
Packaging as in making someone take his dead weight contract. That dude provides no value at all.
SoxAce
Chris Johnson is awful, so it should come as no surprise they wanna do that.
Chisoxfn
QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 09:08 PM) Packaging as in making someone take his dead weight contract. That dude provides no value at all. No one ever said Johnson was worth anything, but maybe it allows the Sox to get Upton without giving up as significant pieces. thxfrthmmrs
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 11:10 PM) No one ever said Johnson was worth anything, but maybe it allows the Sox to get Upton without giving up as significant pieces. On one hand he's hit close to .400 against lefties the past 2 years, on the other hand, he's pretty much useless against right handers. He's essentially the right handed version of Conor Gillaspie, but with a $23 million contract. Unless they lower Upton's price by a good amount, that's a steep price to pay for a bench player. Chisoxfn
Personally, I'd be more content just going for a different option like Ethier or Cabrera and if we really wanted to pick up money and roll the dice, even someone like Kemp (but I still think its a huge risk). I just figure Kenny's MO has always been swing big and the Sox really like Upton. If we could acquire the two of them without giving up elite prospects, you do it, imo (let JR take on that extra payroll, haha). I am still amazed that the Dodgers might be able to move Kemp and his contract for a catcher like Grandal (and not have to send money). That said, no deal on Kemp has been done so maybe the Padres really aren't willing to do all of that. I'd rather get a solid outfielder and a 3B to go with a closer. Or at the minimum, the OF, a good righty 3B platoon bat, and the closer.
GreenSox
I guess I missed the announcement that the world will end on NOvember 1, 2015
thxfrthmmrs
Upton is a sexy name and acquiring him would make many fans "dream again" as KW said. But I am afraid that he might walk after next year, and we are only left with 2 more years of Chris Johnson. And I would be shocked if Anderson isn't part of the deal, even with the discount that is taking on Johnson. I, too, would much prefer Kemp over Upton. If we can swap Danks for Kemp and a cost controlled bullpen arm, heck I wouldn't mind if Dodgers don't send along any money (also JR's wallet haha)
BaconOnAStick
I am not opposed now to emptying the farm a little for Upton. If the Sox can avoid shipping Anderson that'd be ideal... but it's all on the table.
