Anybody else left feeling a little disappointed?

The big thing here is that nothing we have done so far weakened our prospects in the future. No key pieces of the team were given up. No ridiculous contracts were signed. The worst thing we did it potentially handicap the ability to spend more dollars in 2015. What we did was to open up our window a year, maybe even two years, early. We opened that window and left ourselves the type of squad is going to be looking to win for the next few years.

Is it perfect? No. But then again no team in the AL Central is perfect. The leaders all have major holes.

Yep, you're right. We did give up SOME future value, but it felt like we got more present value in return. For example, the Samardzija trade did cost us some real prospects, but left the top ten intact. Semien is real value, but was part of our deepest position on the chart. The Robertson deal carries real risk in future spending flexibility, but it's 4/46, not 7/175 or something, so the downside is significant, but not crippling.

All the deals, individually, felt like they were either good deals or, at worst, market rate deals, and that adds up to a pretty savvy offseason that toes the line between present and future really nicely.

I'm disappointed as well. Why didn't we sign Scherzer AND Shields, trade for Trout and at least try to pry Kershaw away from the Dodgers?

I wonder why I even root for this team. Disgusting. f*** Hahn.

it is not Hahn....... it is JR.... he always have done this. i defended him in

the 90's and on other boards as well as this one in the early 2000. but

i am laying it on the line now.

don't be convince that what you have in the farm is enuf to get you to the

playoff and further.

I think you're right that the team has holes and lacks depth, but now you're seeing why so many of us were/are hesitant to "push the chips in" so soon. I think many of us often forget that there's only so much a GM can accomplish over a given period of time. You can't just say "I want that guy" and pay up -- other parties have to agree to contract condition and trade proposals, and things are ALWAYS more complicated than we assume from the fan perspective.

The best way to look at this team is that it's definitely good enough to contend. Yes, most things are going to need to go well. Yes, an injury or two could derail it. But this signals a period of time where Rick Hahn is planning (and will be expected) to put a competitive team on the field every year that he holds his job.

But you're going to be able to find holes. You're not likely to be able to go into a season confident that every position looks awesome.

the the beauty of having you smart posters here. to calm the excited posters like me. :D

but come on, all the fans can see the improvement and see that it is not yet completed. JR,

wants to have the money committed first, well the surplus of players is now and the supply

is dwindling.

yes you do have a good , no a great point, but with young prospects to come up and

fill in the holes that may develop, the sox can't do that. yeah they can invest in 1 more

SP, the positional lineup looks great, but the pitching is going to carry this team. yeah, a

strong 1-3 sp is great for playoff time. but the sox need to get there and without injury.

the salary is between 115-118 mil, go and get another rental.

pls don't get disappointed b/c of my and a handful of posters who complains about

the glass being half full.

this team as is, is going to be freaking exciting. esp Jose A. what a lineup the sox

are going to field #1-7 >>>> that is 1 really nice lineup.

signing a FA is too much of a commitment esp when the farms are getting ready to

produce. but they are at least 1 to 2 yrs away.

Yeah, I also would have liked to see a reclamation-type pitcher thrown in on a one-year deal -- and we may still see that happen.

and that is the bullcrap that gets to me. wash has a viable 6 man rotation, bos

is signing a pitcher i really like in eveland (sp) padres are looking to adding arms.

the sox have a 1 yr rental in jeff s, many are expecting rodon to come in lights

out and pitch. the 4/5 of the rotation has question marks.

what happen an injury happens, what happen if hector doesn't perform like last

yr. what happen if erik johnson or beck does not come thru.

this is basically what happen last yr. i am not being overally negative, more like

cautious. but this is what JR does, just spend enuf to entice, to get the fans

hype, to bring in advance ticket sales.

I was going to mention Danks as well cause I still like him. Your post makes me add him. So you got Sale, Q, Shark, Danks and maybe Rodon at some point? The Sox still could suck, but I don't think you can argue that the pieces are there. Even if Gillaspie sucks we have a realistic option to put in to replace him.

p.s. Why am I forgetting second base? With Semien gone, who starts there? Funny that such a dime a dozen position we have no automatic starter yet.

2B will be Sanchez or Johnson, barring some last minute change.

i am using the old Murphy law in this, to justify my concerns.

and then i keep remembering what O'Reilly had to say about Murphy.

Really hoping Johnson makes a splash this spring and snatches the opportunity. The idea of him hitting 9th with spanky and melky coming up....that's good stuff.

again as a reminder, soxfest up next and then spring training.

can't freaking wait.

I'm secretly hoping for one more splash this weekend.

Thank YOU Douglas.

i don't know why, but all this time i thought as you, a final piece being picked,

whether it thru a trade or fa. that will be right before the weekend or on sat

night. that will be 1 hell of a start for the fest.

well, one can hope i guess.

I think if you told a Soxtalk poster on the last day of the 2014 season the moves that we would make up to now, they wouldn't believe it for a number of reasons.

We may not win enough games to contend this year, but I have an extremely hard time faulting Rick for what he's done thus far.

10000000000% agree. Hahn has put us in a position to contend, and that is all fans could've and should've hoped for this season. I don't know how anyone could be disappointed. This is the best offseason the Sox have had in a long time.

i am in total agreement. with all my b****ing and spouting off and doing a total

rebuild now, b/c this is the time to do so, i would not have believe it was done.

some of the moves were questionable, but now, if JR will allow Hahn to finish the

job he stated.
