oneofthemikes
Is he a lost cause? Or is there a chance he can still be what we thought he could end up being? I know that his velocity was way down last season, but is there any hope of him regaining that 2+ MPH?
Balta1701
Honestly, everyone here's going to give the same answer..."we have no idea". Guys his age just aren't supposed to lose that much off their fastball if there's no injury. We kept wondering about injury the whole year last year and never saw him hit the DL or complain about anything. The Sox thought enough of him to roll with him out of ST even though his velocity was down, so they didn't think it was an injury or they thought it was something he'd recover from with work. It's just so weird. I wouldn't be stunned if he suddenly got his velocity back any more than I am stunned at how things went with him last year. LDF
QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Jan 19, 2015 -> 04:47 PM) I was just thinking about the future of the organization and couldn't help but wonder if he might be a part of the future of it. and that is a valid point, but if the sox brass and medical people don't know what happen, how can we as fans predict. Jake
Even if he starts to look like the guy that had us so excited, he's now in a position where it will be hard for him to get a shot. At least, he has: Sale Samardzija Quintana Danks Noesi Rodon in front of him. You might say guys like Surkamp and Penny too, in terms of guys who would get the call. If he pitches well enough to actually earn a shot I have no problem saying he'll get it before the season is out. A big part of the reason why they signed Penny probably is that they don't know what on Earth happened to him & wanted an extra insurance policy because of that. I don't think anyone is banking on him. Most people tend to ignore/forget about him in their extended projected rotations, myself included. BlackSox13
Balta sums it up best with " we have no idea". Its difficult to have expectations when there's no clue what to expect. The only thing to do is hold onto hope that he can rebound back to what he was in 2013. Johnson has to be one of the biggest wild cards in the Sox system. Barring injury they will start at Charlotte. They will not come north with the club unless there are serious injury problems and they show a lot in ST. They're both going to get time at Charlotte even if they have really good camps.
