Vince Coleman

Loving this. This is a move made with Eaton and Micah in mind, and guys like May and Engel down the road, if we're lucky.

I'm sure it was impossible to pry Davey Lopes out of LA, so this is the next best thing - Vince could teach Micah a ton.

I need a framed and autographed picture of Rick Hahn. This should be a basic item on the mlb.com shop.

Wait, who's Vincle?? Please edit, thanks.

"Coleman's teaching presence only enhances a White Sox group figuring to run quite a bit in 2015. Micah Johnson, Carlos Sanchez, Alexei Ramirez, Emilio Bonifacio, Melky Cabrera and a trimmer Avisail Garcia join Eaton as players capable of contributing to the speed game."

I'm going to predict Micah as OD starter at 2B, but adding he and the slim, healthy Avi to this mix, we're not a bunch of plodders by any means.

Aside from being the only player in MLB history to steal 100+ bases in 3 straight seasons, but, in 1986, he also happened to steal 107 bases (88.4% SB%) with an OBP of .301.

Also, having not done much research at all, and qualifying it with a minimum PA of 2000, I'm guessing he has the most stolen bases (752) per plate appearance (5970).

(I naturally have to qualify because Herb Washington had 46 career stolen bases and 0 career plate appearances)

EDIT: I love Herb Washington as such an outlier in baseball history so much that I edited my poster title.

I love this move. Like a lot of people I was disappointed by the lack of stolen bases last year, it seems like the Sox are looking to start being a team that manufactures runs as opposed to focusing solely on the home run. They also starting to focus more on contact as opposed to power. The team figures to be more exciting on the base paths. I really like this move by the Sox.

Vince is a bit of a loose canon. He had a lot of trouble during his playing days in NY. IIRC he and KW got into it many years ago at a Cubs/Sox tilt when he was a minor league imstructor for the Cubs. The Sox wouldn't let him sit in the dugout during the game which was their right. There supposedly was a pretty crazy argument between the two around the batting cage. Hopefully, he has matured and can get better results from these guys on the bases.

IMO, however, if he can make 25 steal guys 50 steal guys during spring training, he probably wouldn't be available.

The Sox had Tim Raines around a lot never seemed to help but I'll keep an open mind.

as you said, maturity/....

if not and this experience is failing, termination.

One thing's for sure, it's seemingly easier for JR and Co. to get rid of non-Sox guys/outsiders than someone "inside the family."

Hope it works out.

Those 80's Cardinals teams with Coleman, McGee, Van Slyke, Pendleton, Lonnie Smith, Tom Herr, Jack Clark and Ozzie were lots of fun to watch in terms of the impact on the other teams with their aggressiveness.

Will never forget the episode where he got rolled over by the tarp machine back in the good 'ol days when most of the NL fields were Astroturf.

I like the move and in all fairness to Raines, he didn't have as many athletic players to work with that Coleman will have so even if the Sox improve on the basepaths it should not take anything away from Raines. Coleman would not have done any better with the likes of Paulie, Dunn, AJ etc. Those guys were like snails drag racing through molasses.

but when you have a whole group of plow horses, you can't expect a thoroughbred to appear.

Exactly. Micah is the proverbial lump of clay. He has a real chance to be a high-impact player if he can steal often and efficiently.

I think it's more about setting a "team mindset."

There have been some seasons where Rios and Ramirez, for example, seemed like they ran a lot more.

I'm sure this move is aimed specifically at Eaton and Micah Johnson.

i like that, a team mindset, to be aggressive on the base path, while at bat, and on defense. ulta aggressive, get the fans involve.

i like it.

I wonder if that means this team is more Rick Hahn then Kenny Williams?

i personally think that the job description and duties have change, with KW being #2 to the owners.

i think Hahn is a subordinate to KW with a different job description.

personality aside, Vince Coleman was a game changer esp when he was on base. he made the other teams pitcher change their game plan, he made the other teams defense more aware and esp he made the other teams catcher sweat bullets.

so the question is is there another player like that playing, and do you think that Micah Johnson of the sox can be a little of VC??
