Was going to say exactly that. Even more surprised at the Samardzija trade, given he has only one year of control.

Also, LMAO at Gordon Beckham being called a "super utility man."

So Gordon Beckham is now a "super utility man"?

FanGraphs (Dave Cameron) does not feature the Sox in any of their top ten transactions or their honorable mentions.

Personally I loved the Samardzija and LaRoche moves. I am big fan of Brandon McCarthy but signing him to a four year deal wouldn't strike me as a top ten move in any season. and Wade Miley? really?

He factored team situation into it heavily (mentioned in comments that it was the entire reason that the Victor Martinez deal wasn't on the WORST list), so I'm not surprised that the Sox didn't make his list, since he's been one that thinks the Sox are just fringe contenders this year.

I was surprised to see him list Upton to the Padres as one of his best but said nothing of the Samardzija trade. Now that the dust has settled and has been cleaned with Pledge, that really seems like the best trade of the offseason. I'm biased, but it really seems like the Sox gave up low ceiling talent for a strong #2-3 and a high ceiling relief prospect. Worst case scenario, the Sox are going to get another draft pick for Samardizja, and that was part of his justification for giving the Padres as good of a grade as they did on that trade.

I'm surprised the Melky Cabrera deal has gotten no love. IMO, it's one of the few non-Cuban deals that is likely to provide surplus value over the life of the contract. Plus by all accounts he's a great clubhouse guy. I personally think it was a better signing than the LaRoche deal, which seems to be getting a lot of praise.

Cabrera's past hangs over him, and rightfully so. If he didn't have that history, he would have gotten a deal similar to Panda this year, maybe more.

Got our answer:

Comment From witesoxfan

Given that part of the reason for ranking the Upton trade so highly was that the compensation pick they'll get if/when they lose Upton will possibly be worth more than they gave up, why wasn't the Samardzija trade considered the same?

Dave Cameron

The White Sox gave up more.

I certainly don't think so, but to each his own.

Wow. I'd take that Braves package over the one we sent any day of the week. Fried is far and away the best player in either trade.

I think Samardzija is more valuable than Upton too, plus the Sox got Michael Ynoa. Generally, I think we underrate Josh Phegley and the thought around the industry may be that his ultimate ceiling is that of an averagish catcher in the majors, while Semien's upside is that of an above average player.

Phegley has a really long swing. If someone could shorten it, he could be a major league catcher... well as a hitter. Defensively? Ugh.

I like that comparison. Pablo's clearly the better player at a more premium position but his deal has zero upside. At best he's worth his contract. Personally I think there's a fat chance of that happening. Melky only needs to about 5 war in his contract to make it worth it for the Sox.

Melky is a good player he's not the same guy he was in NY at the dish anymore. Maybeyou can say that's due to PEDs but I saw the guy make one of the more bone headed mental gaffes a ballplayer will ever make (missed a ball tipping his cap to the intros at yankee stadium about 20 feet in front of us back in 2009) and it's clear he had a lot of mental growing up to do on and off the field .

When you break into the Bronx at 20, a full time starter at 21, it can go to your head.

Something clicked with the guy a few years ago and I think he's going to produce about 6 WAR in three years. A lot depends on his defense but in the smallish LF of the Cell I can't imagine he'll have much trouble. PEDs or not, the guy keeps himself in great shape and at 29 hard to imagine he'll decline too much athletically in three years. Injury could happen, and he does have some history there (the tumor thing wtf) so as with anything hope for health.

That poll is only for the teams that spent a total of $60MM to $70MM on free agents this offseason. The White Sox spent well over that which is why they are not mentioned.

while you may be correct, which i didn't know, they should have done the poll on teams who spent over 60 mil.

i think it is a stupid poll, next the new poll will be those teams who spent less than 1 million.

I can't see Phegley being a useful MLB player. His defensive shortcomings were bad. He also seemed to be very soft mentally.
