Mr. Showtime
From Dave Van Dyck at FoxSports: But sources said the Braves were closer to a deal with the Giants, believed to be for San Francisco pitcher Russ Ortiz. The Giants are trying to get under their self-imposed $75 million "salary cap" and deleting Ortiz's $4.4 million would help. A possible deal with the Yankees is on hold, apparently over whether George Steinbrenner wants to pay something like $5 million of "El Duque" Hernandez's salary. The trade is believed to be for Vazquez (although Colon is a possibility) and involves Hernandez, first baseman Nick Johnson and outfielder Juan Rivera. "I've spoken with them, we're trying to bridge the gap," Minaya said. "There's a difference in the value of our players." A possible deal with the Red Sox is also on hold, while Boston ponders whether it can take Vazquez (or possibly Colon) and Tatis' $6.5 million contract. Minaya would get back third baseman Shea Hillenbrand, an unknown name and cash. The hot rumor Monday afternoon was that the Braves were close to a deal with Minaya, taking Colon (or Vazquez) and possibly Tatis for a young pitcher. Mr. Showtime
That's kind of why this Ortiz deal doesn't make sense. They'd be adding 2 million in salary in Konerko. At least Lee would even up with Ortiz's salary.
Molto
unless of course Snow is thrown in. then in that case we would have us an extra 4 million in salary with the Giants losing 4 million. do we want to add 4 mil in salary? I think the Sox would feel more comfortable with Liefer at first than throwing Snow out there for close to 7 mil. then again, all depends how bad they want Ortiz. this whole trade is very weird though. it can't be Konerko for Ortiz straight up unless we pay for AT LEAST 2 mil of Konerko's salary, which at that point would make the deal a complete joke. Guest hotsoxchick1
not adding if we send cash considerations along with paulie.....you know how generous kw is when it comes to that..........espically if its for something he wants bad enough...i can hear it now.. we have been looking at ortiz for some time now... he is just what we think will fit in nicely with our plans... sound familiar??? kw's standard make a move speach.....get ready i feel it coming once again ........ Mr. Showtime
I agree Mario. Something is very odd about this. For a team that loves to cry poor, they sure seem to be able to dish out money in these trades.
Guest hotsoxchick1
isnt it amazing where kw finds the cash when its a player he really wants to have here.........he must have some accountant.......lol
Molto
I'll say this, if he wants Ortiz bad enough and the Giants want to dump salary and get Konerko, do this. Trade them Konerko for Ortiz and Snow and have them pay 2 million of Snow's salary. that way we add 2 mil in payroll and they cut off 2 mil. they get the first baseman they want to bat behind Bonds. and we get a strong #2 pitcher, which will in return make Garland #3, Wright #4, and Rauch #5. we also wouldn't have keep Ritchie, so there is more salary, but it looks as if he's staying. we also get a GREAT defensive first baseman, who will help guys like Crede and Jimenez (I won't say Valentin cause I don't know who in the world can help him lol) PLUS, if he's healthy could give us 15 homers and 80-90 RBI. not a bad deal if you think about it. sure would suck to lose Konerko though. Molto
lol, doesn't that make sense though HSC? if we were deal Konerko for Ortiz? I think that would be the most reasonable way, outside of them adding Bonds.

Absolutely. But, then again, what makes sense in our minds doesn't necessarily make sense in KW's warped mind or JR's checkbook
