Just wondering if they have options left. Like Guerra...I could see him getting traded or DFA if he's out of options. Sox are in a position where they may have to add Johnson, Soto, and Crain and/or Albers to the 40-man, so a couple these guys may have to go. Maybe an 8-man bullpen buys a couple weeks to evaluate in-season.

Most of the issues will take care of themselves over the next five weeks or so.

What is interesting to me is the Red Sox have so many options in the OF. Hanley is LF, Betts/Castillo in CF/RF, Jackie Bradley Jr., Allen Craig, Daniel Nava and Shane Victorino. Boston has writers saying Victorino is going to start but I don't buy that. At least a couple of these guys are going to be on the way out two months from now and if the Red Sox were pushed to DFAing or trading Victorino+cash I would be interested. Great makeup, great baserunner, RH bat to give LaRoche a break against lefties, etc. Obviously he has injury issues but he was awesome as recent as '13. If the Red Sox go with one of their younger guys and can't move him/DFA him the Sox would be the fourth team to get a crack at him.

Don't forget Brock Holt though he's listed as an infielder he played a lot of OF last year and did very well.

I agree here and there's also the Dodgers and Padres with too many outfielders. Perhaps other teams. I tend to think the Sox will wait it out and make a deal during spring training to pick up an outfielder who is squeezed out elsewhere that will be better than our internal options Shuck and Michael Taylor.

This is exactly what I've thought all along.

The Royals (of course) have talked about carrying 13 pitchers this year.

That's kind of a unique situation with Hochevar's recovery.

It would make sense if the White Sox were bringing both Crain and Nathan Jones north for Opening Day, but that's of course entirely implausible.

Odds are they end up with 7 and 4 bench players...Ventura will want to have a late-inning replacement for Avi if he continues to struggle defensively. Who knows, maybe he'll be decent this year.

i like the idea of a nice group of pitchers in the pen. this may be the best group the sox have had in a long time. as of right now, they may even have more in the wings, via thru the off season trades. in addition the top prospects, those who were also drafted. now this would be an embarrassment of riches.

now here is where Hahn comes in, i know the sox will have more of an idea towards the end of spring training, but maybe Hahn can trade some of them. use them to continue to build the system. positional players, a catcher, would be the main focus of those trades.

any ideas??

Not really. Nobody's going to give you much at all for a Putnam, Petricka, Webb or Guerra at the start of the season...they're way too unproven.

What will be more compelling to watch is whether Rodon, Montas or Danish end up in the pen (especially the last two names) in August and September. Sanburn's another arm to monitor, if he's 100% healthy.

As it is, there aren't a lot of veteran arms down there. We're waiting on Crain and Nathan Jones...then you have guys like Cleto and Surkamp with pretty minimal value.

If you were another team, why would you want Chris Beck or Brad Penny, for example? You can find them on the waiver wire for practically nothing.

all true, the sox FO will know more of how best to use these pitchers and esp with Montas, and Danish.

it is still a nice group of pitchers.
