OmarComing25
There was an inside-the-park home run by both teams in the Royals-Rays game last night. First time that's happened since '97.

Balta1701
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 9, 2015 -> 06:37 PM) Is that because he is playing out of position? The White Sox never believed in him as a SS and even when Saladino went down with an injury at AAA last year they didn't play Semien there as an everyday player. The Sox treated him as a utility player throughout his time in the minors, so he never really got to work on "be the best SS you can be". The White Sox may well have been correct in that assessment and Semien may simply not have the physical tools to be an adequate SS, the A's might give up and move him somewhere else in a year or two. OTOH, the A's also seem to believe he can handle that position, so they clearly seem to feel he can improve there given time. Basically, if Semien would never be able to be a good SS, he'd be struggling there this much, and if Semien needed practice to not be a terrible SS, he'd be struggling there this much. flavum
Buehrle gave up a quick first inning run, but 23 pitches in 3 innings. Hope he gets his 10th win today in KC, even though we should probably be rooting for KC in the game. Edited July 11, 2015 by flavum

Balta1701
One of the worst calls you will see all year in the Pirates/Cardinals game 10 minutes ago. 2 strikes on Mark Reynolds. Burnett strikes Reynolds out swinging on a breaking ball with 2 outs. Inning is over. Ump rules that there is a foul tip. Replay clearly shows there is no foul tip. Ball never changes direction, no change in sound, absolutely terrible call, the bat misses the ball by an inch or more. Argument, no challenge. Reynolds homers on the next pitch. Free run for the division leading Cardinals. Should have been inning over with no extra pitch. Cervelli thrown out quickly, Hurdle thrown out after about a minute. Handed the Cardinals a cheap 1-0 lead. Obnoxious. Terrible, terrible, terrible call. I'm glad that didn't happen to Chris today because you'd have heard me B****ing about that in November. BlackSox13
Pirates are looking for OF bench bats. Wonder if the Sox could talk them into Boni since Boni's style of play fits the NL. Could help the Pirates on the infield while Harrison is down. Boni would cost less to acquire than Revere or Francour. Not something I'm counting on, just throwing it out there. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/07/pira...-francoeur.html

EvilMonkey
OK, may be a stupid question, but here goes. WHy do players take BP with a pitcher throwing like 50 mph or so instead of someone throwing game speed?
Jake
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 05:43 PM) OK, may be a stupid question, but here goes. WHy do players take BP with a pitcher throwing like 50 mph or so instead of someone throwing game speed? You're usually working on your swing mechanics, getting loose, etc. When the pitches are coming in at game speed, it's too difficult to be thinking about the minutiae of what you are doing while also managing to make contact. I'd also mention that the BP pitches usually are thrown from a lot closer than game pitches. So while it isn't a direct translation to MLB speeds, it is a bit more difficult than hitting a ~70mph (that's a normal BP speed) pitch from 60 feet. But the main thing is just that it isn't meant to help players work on pitch recognition or anything like that. Of course there is also the practical concern that you would need several pro-level pitchers to hang around and throw every day yet also not be good enough to need to be throwing in the pros and also not have their arms fall off from the effort.
