Bottom 5 in the AL...

Indians 33-41

Mariners 34-42

Red Sox 34-43

A's 34-44

White Sox 32-42

5 teams out of it before the break, and 4 of these teams had real expectations going into the season.

And all 4 based those expectations on major free agent signings. Maybe that's worth noting?

Absolutely. On the position player side, the game is about being young, energetic, and athletic.

Which major free agents were the Indians banking on? Their expectations were based on growth from starting pitching.

Unless you're not counting them among the four teams that had expectations.

Maybe backdating it to the idea of Swisher and Bourn coming in before 2013 (probably)....while their "core" of Santana/Brantley/Gomes/Kipnis/now Lindor has basically remained the same.

Their pitching staff was either internally developed or traded for (Bauer/Carrasco), but no huge free agents additions there.

With each coming year, betting big on the top tier FAs looks more like a fool's errand

I could see Justin Upton becoming another cautionary tale this offseason.

He's a great player but the red flags scare me. Especially at the price he'll command.

Actually I was going with Oakland there since they signed Butler to a multi-year deal.

I thought the Rays would be smart enough to steer away from that grease fire.

Btw, Kipnis is putting up some incredible stats recently.

Time for Phil Rogers to dream Jason was on the South Side and pen an All-Star advocacy column.

Did you know Curtis Granderson was from Chicago too????? And neither team drafted him!!!! Thanks, Phil.

Mark Buehrle with another great start today. 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. After a very poor start to the year in which he had a 6.75 ERA and 1.928 WHIP through his first 5 starts he has really turned it around and is having a typical Buehrle season.

2015 Totals:

9-4, 3.64 ERA, 1.194 WHIP, 106.1 IP, 9.06 H/9, 1.69 BB/9, 4.82 K/9, 2.85 K/BB

Last 11 starts:

6-2, 2.53 ERA, .932 WHIP, 78.1 IP, 6.89 H/9, 1.49 BB/9, 5.28 K/9, 3.54 K/BB

Pretty damn good for a guy that tops out at 86 MPH.

In a little bit of '05 nostalgia for ya, AJ Pierzynski and Juan Uribe hit back to back homers for the Braves tonight.

Upon reading this, Reinsdorf just gave Kenny a 5 year contract extension

Didn't realize Bonilla was getting $1.2 million per season all the way through 2035.

That's like Herschel Walker's New Jersey General/Trump contract.

Deferring money can be a good concept and helped the Mets make the World Series.

Deferring money at 8 percent interest? Not so much.

Three SP's made their season debuts this afternoon. Only one was any good.

Matt Moore: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 4 R

Matt Cain: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 K, 4 BB, 5 R

Jose Fernandez: 6 IP, 7 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 3 R, also hit a solo homer
