Iwritecode
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 07:28 PM) You're usually working on your swing mechanics, getting loose, etc. When the pitches are coming in at game speed, it's too difficult to be thinking about the minutiae of what you are doing while also managing to make contact. I'd also mention that the BP pitches usually are thrown from a lot closer than game pitches. So while it isn't a direct translation to MLB speeds, it is a bit more difficult than hitting a ~70mph (that's a normal BP speed) pitch from 60 feet. But the main thing is just that it isn't meant to help players work on pitch recognition or anything like that. Of course there is also the practical concern that you would need several pro-level pitchers to hang around and throw every day yet also not be good enough to need to be throwing in the pros and also not have their arms fall off from the effort. Also, if they want to see "real" speeds, they just use a pitching machine, which is probably available to them in the clubhouse area somewhere. chw42
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 02:54 PM) http://grantland.com/the-triangle/trading-...er-loan-system/ I've always found the loan system interesting in soccer. It's a very foreign concept to American sports, but it's a very good tool to develop players in soccer. Have a guy who's not good enough to start for you, but good enough to start for a mid-table team? Loan him for a season, let him get some PT, and grow. Jake
This is the first season I've had regular access to MLB Network and I've been really impressed. They have good, original programming. Several likable personalities and the format in general does a good job of balancing the SportsCenter-esque need for repetitive news with some engaging stuff to break up the monotony. Jake
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 01:46 PM) But of course Pedro NEVER used PEDs, right Pedro? I often think about how if [insert player] really didn't use PEDs, that they were truly victimized by playing in the era. So, given the context, suppose Pedro was clean. We're talking about easily the best pitcher of all time if he played today.

flavum
13 teams at 4 games under .500 or worse. http://espn.go.com/mlb/standings/_/group/overall Will any of these teams reach .500 again? I don't think so. The second wildcard and weak divisions are fool's gold.

Soxfest
Diamondbacks signed first-round shortstop Dansby Swanson. There never seemed to be any real worry that a deal wouldn't get done, but it wasn't officially agreed upon until right before Friday's deadline. John Gambadoro of 98.7 FM in Phoenix says Swanson will receive $6.5 million, which is significantly under the recommended slot value for the No. 1 overall pick of $8.6169 million. Swanson is expected to be a pretty quick mover. Wow way under slot

While it’s impossible to guess exactly how much the injury cost Buehler, the slot value for the No. 24 pick was $2,094,400. He signed for $314,400 under-slot." lasttriptotulsa
Last night Mark Buehrle set a Blue Jays record with his 9th straight start of 6+ innings pitched allowing 2 or less earned runs. Since the beginning of June he is 5-1, 1.52 ERA, .938 WHIP, 5.7 K/BB. He hasn't walked a batter since June 26, a span of 29 1/3 IP. He's putting together a pretty nice season. 11-5, 3.23 ERA, 1.161 WHIP, 3.20 K/BB. If he decides to keep pitching, he could be setting himself for a pretty nice contract this offseason.
