NorthSideSox72
Now a week into Cactus League play, we're going to start doing weekly stock reports for players that are NOT already locked into a 25-man job. LDF
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 03:14 PM) Now a week into Cactus League play, we're going to start doing weekly stock reports for players that are NOT already locked into a 25-man job. Who has helped themselves? Hurt themselves, literally or figuratively? Here is Week One. Thoughts? that was great in insightful. gave me a huge amount of updated info that i wasn't able to get, esp on players who is not in the spotlight. 2 of my players, pitchers are not looking too good. keep up the great work. His roster spot is not contested. Well, I mean it's easy to see why people might think otherwise -- because he doesn't look like one of the 25 best players in camp. I agree with you, though, that he'll probably be there anyway.

Judging people by their numbers in spring training on March 11, is like predicting who wins a golf tournament based on the very first hole. bmags
D'oh, my brother just sent me that it's behind a paywall, sorry everyone. They ran stats and found that players that outperformed their zips projections in spring training went on to overperform in the season, same trend in underperforming. NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 10:41 AM) Beckham is on the team. I don't know why anyone would think otherwise. His roster spot is not contested. He PROBABLY is. Not definitely or definitely not. The real question though was whether he might sneak into a starter's role, which was already unlikely and now seems nigh impossible.
Whisox05
One thing noticed is zach duke. 2 innings. 5 hits and 3 earned runs and 13.50 era. Really hoping he doesn't scott downs a spring training and carry over to regular season. Edited March 11, 2015 by WhiteSoxLifer

My statement was not referring exclusively to Spring Training. Gordon Beckham has a strong track record of being awful, so he needs to prove that he belongs on the 25 man. Melky does not. I'm firmly Team Sanchez but obviously Micah's stock is up. It's not in dispute. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 11, 2015 -> 10:49 AM) Neither does Melky Cabrera at this point. Judging people by their numbers in spring training on March 11, is like predicting who wins a golf tournament based on the very first hole. It's more like predicting who wins the tournament after the first hole on Sunday. We actually have a lot more information than just their stats on March 11. In this case, we know Melky has a Major League track record of being good and a big contract. Beckham has neither of those things. So while I agree with you that he's gonna make the team, I can envision a scenario where he doesn't and they dump him. It is not a certainty. I know and the White Sox gave him a contract for $2.5 million to be a back up. He will be on the team. Care to bet? They ran stats and found that players that outperformed their zips projections in spring training went on to overperform in the season, same trend in underperforming. If this is the same article that they talked about on South Side Sox earlier this week, there are a few 'buts' to mention. First you have to consider where on the scale of established vet to fighting for a roster spot the guy sits, because you have to know whether you can place any faith at all in the numbers. Once you've determined that, I think it's something like a 30 point swing in the OPS or ERA projection if the guy has the best or worst spring ever (so from 4.00 to 3.70 or from .750 to .780). The impact is very minor, but yes, there is some meaning.

Shouldn't we all be worried about Duke? He's had a history of being terrible and on March 11th, he is terrible. Your hatred of anything Gordon Beckham is noted, but you can't have it both ways. If Beckham was 13-13 with 5 homers, you would say his numbers are meaningless. So saying he isn't one of the top 25 players in camp because he is 1-13 is ridiculous. ILMOU
Great stuff NSS, as always. I hope that you are right, and that Gordo can potentially be left off the 25, depending on his level of suckage and the performance of those competing. BTW, is Saladino already reassigned? He's the guy I want to see replacing Gordo, sooner or later. Unlike Gordo and Sanchez, seems to kill LHP, making him more platoon suitable to the other personnel. And probably has the most pop of the bunch. Found some nice info on Danish's outing http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/pfx.ph...hamlb_kcamlb_1/ Apparently reached 92.5, not too bad. Found it through this article article on SSS, http://www.southsidesox.com/2015/3/11/8188...for-second-base talking about TD now throwing more of a slider ( "Coop calls it a cutter"), vs. the "slurve" type of pitch he had been throwing. Saladino is still in big league camp, but sadly, the presence of Beckham means his chances of breaking camp with the team are near zero. The only camp re-assignments so far have been Taylor's retirement and the addition of Engel Beltre to replace him in big league camp. I kinda thought the GB reacquisition might have been somewhat related to Saladino's recovery timetable. Would love to see him given a real shot. That Brooks data is freakin tremendous, imo, and I'll be checking it out for Rodon today and the other guys going forward, especially Montas. Did not know it existed for ST.
