CaliSoxFanViaSWside
Jose will be the opening day starter. Despite all the talk from Brian Kenney on MLB Network about wins not meaning anything ,the fact that the Sox have sucked and Jose is the King of the No Decision , wins are precisely why he is basically still unknown to many fans. I thought last year was a sort of break out season for him though in reality it was just part of his continued improvement from year to year. That FIP will be hard to top as will the low HR total . Jose will be a little more famous when the Sox win more, Jose gets more wins, and maybe if he gets the ERA under 3. Funny how wins and ERA are still the driving forces behind a pitcher getting the recognition he deserves.

CyAcosta41
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 15, 2015 -> 12:31 PM) Samardijiza is actually in line to start the opener so far. But so is Quintana -- they both pitched yesterday. My take -- the Sox will go with Quintana. He's been an exemplary citizen and performer for a few years now. National recognition means nothing -- everyone who knows baseball knows that Quintana and Samardzija are in the same general tier of pitcher. This is where having a respected ex-player like Robin comes into play. He knows when it's six of one, a half-dozen of the other (in terms of quality), the locker room benefits by going with the guy with seniority. And my read on the blue-collar, union guy JS is that he'd actually respect that decision MORE than going with the new kid on the block (and maybe that's another tipping factor in the re-signing decision). Dick Allen
Jose Quintana was a 3.7 WAR pitcher in 2013 and a 5.3 WAR pitcher in 2014. The breakout already happened.
flavum
My hope is Quintana gets the OD start, and they keep Samardzija on the same schedule he would have had with Sale in front of him. Plus then they would be messing withe L-R order if Smarj goes first. Just my humble opinion.

You are always going to have back to back from the same hand with a 5 man rotation,
flavum
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 15, 2015 -> 12:46 PM) If Sale starts the 5th game of the season, then you have Sale and Q back to back. You are always going to have back to back from the same hand with a 5 man rotation, At earliest, Sale will start the 6th game (4/12) but ultimately I'd like to see the order fall into Sale, Samardzija, Quintana, Danks, Noesi. I had Sale coming back on the 18th before Kenny said anything, and it still wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't make his first start until Detroit. flavum
4-6 at KC Quintana 4-7 4-8 at KC Samardzija 4-9 at KC Danks 4-10 vs Min Noesi 4-11 vs Min Penny (or whoever) 4-12 vs Min Quintana 4-13 4-14 at Cle Samardzija 4-15 at Cle Danks 4-16 4-17 at Det Noesi 4-18 at Det Sale 4-19 at Det Samardzija 4-20 vs Cle Quintana 4-21 vs Cle Danks 4-22 vs Cle Noesi 4-23 vs KC Sale 4-24 vs KC Samardzija 4-25 vs KC Quintana 4-26 vs KC Danks 4-27 at Bal Noesi 4-28 at Bal Sale 4-29 at Bal Samardzija 4-30 at Min Quintana Of course rain/snow... but I like Sale coming back where he would have been, and the order being what it would have been behind him. Dick Allen
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 15, 2015 -> 12:50 PM) At earliest, Sale will start the 6th game (4/12) but ultimately I'd like to see the order fall into Sale, Samardzija, Quintana, Danks, Noesi. I had Sale coming back on the 18th before Kenny said anything, and it still wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't make his first start until Detroit. If Sale starts game 6, the opening day starter is pitching game 5 on regular rest, assuming no rainout. So if Q opens up, you still have 2 lefties vs. Min. Mauer wouldn't be happy. I don't know how much it matters, but if Sale right now can start game 6, you would think he would be good enough for game 5 which would technically mean no missed starts. While the lefty then righty is nice, hopefully they remain healthy and effective enough to even worry aboit it.
caulfield12
Danks should go before Quintana. That would make his (Jose's) fastball SEEM to jump up even more...along with his deceptive motion. With Danks following, his finished stuff is even easier to pick up, and quickly. There's a bigger disparity between Jeff and John than any other pairing other than Sale behind Danks instead of Q. Samardzija...Danks...Q....Noesi. Then you slot Chris in at the front upon his return. Edited March 15, 2015 by caulfield12
caulfield12
Balthasar not going to take a run at the "mismanagement" of Marcus' playing time and position changes/lack of security and stability in the everyday lineup early last year? My thoughts exactly . One thing you didn't mention if Samardzija pitches the opener then it goes R-L-L-R if Quintana opens then its L-R-L-R. But what you said is why I said Q will start the opener. CaliSoxFanViaSWside
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 15, 2015 -> 12:19 PM) Who here loves Saunders? I chatted him up pretty good before we got Melky and LaRoche ( I think) when it was rumored Seattle would more than likely be moving him. I ,too, thought if he could stay injury free he was the right age for a breakout plus we needed a lefty bat at the time . I remember other posters echoing that sentiment. I believe I was one the people talking about him as well. As for Q. I agree the breakout has already happened, now its about sustaining the success he's had for the last two seasons. Not to knock Q but its hard to imagine him getting better in the " breakout " sense. The only thing I really expect more from Q would be innings pitched. I'm beyond happy with the rest of his stats. I'd be real happy with that for the next 6 years. If Q "breaks out" this year, he's looking at competing with Sale for the Cy Young. By WAR, Sale (5.4) and Quintana (5.3) were the 8th and 9th best pitchers last year.
