Yes Mr Caulfield please do. It will be a long season with you hating on Beckam all year. I am surprised you haven't blamed Gordon Beckam for the arm soreness of Robertson & Petrika and Johnson's physical issue. Show some support :nono

Brad Penny is awful. Even when he was doing ok in his starts, he looked to have very little on his pitches. I think I'd rather take a chance with Carroll.

I know I'd rather take that chance. But am I mistaken or does Penny have an Article XX-B contract described here?

"Players with six years of major-league service time that sign minor-league deals now have what is called Article XX-B protection. Teams either have to put these players on the major-league roster or release them five days prior to the start of the MLB season. If they do neither, they must pay that player a $100,000 retention bonus. This is essentially a built-in out clause for veteran players. If you are an Article XX-B free agent, you also receive an automatic June 1 out clause if you're paid the $100,000. Most teams get around this retention bonus by releasing a player and then resigning him sometime before the five days prior to Opening Day."

If he does, then the Sox have reason to go with him instead of Carroll, as small as the reason is.

Penny has zero chance the make the roster. They'd have to add him to the 40 man, not gonna happen, even before today's performance. Look at his B-Ref page. The last time this guy was good Obama was in his first term.

I don't think he'd be getting as many innings as he's gotten this spring if they weren't thinking of bringing him.

They are doing him a solid letting him get work in and audition for another team -- especially with Johnson on the shelf. See Larry's posts over at SSS on the Rodon start last night -- Sox already have 40 man issues and Hahn is hinting that they aren't even going to need an extra starter because Sale is going to be ready even earlier than the 12th.

Clearly his chances are not zero, in fact they're pretty good to get that Sale slot for a start or two. At least as good as Carroll.

That said, I'd prefer Carroll as well.

Yeah, but if Sale is ready for the April 12 game then we won't need anyone to fill in for him.

It certainly sounds like Sale pitching April 12 is a strong possibility now.

In that case, Penny will probably be let go.

Well yeah if Sale will be ready before they need another starter, then Penny probably goes away and Carroll is in AAA.

Hawk talking about the front-loaded division games...he doesn't realize, and probably many don't realize, every team in baseball starts the season playing 8 of the first 10 series in your own division.

Same thing for the last five weeks of the the season.

First 10 series- 8 division series

Middle 32 series- 8 division series

Last 10 series- 8 division series
