September 2003

I was reflecting on something yesterday that ncorg mentioned in a thread I read today - the fact that it is September and we are in a race. The last time that happened as far as I can recall was the 4-way race in 1967.

In 1983, 1993, and 2000, we had enough of a lead that it was a matter of looking at the celendar to find a clinch date. There was no September in 1994. In 1977 we were falling totally out of it in early September. In no other seasons since 1967 do I recall us having any near misses.

The prior races in which we were involved were in the 60s and 1959, and only a few of us here remember that.

So this is special, and I can only suggest to enjoy it without pessimism and emotional roller coastering. We will lose some games between now and the end of the season, no need to panic every time we do. We will win some games between now and the end of the season, and can't prcolaim ourselves kings of the world when we do.

Enjoy. Before this season started, it was only our hope and our dream that come September we'd be in 1st and in a race for the division title. This is what we wished for - enjoy it while it is happening.

Go Sox!

Let's win this! :headbang :headbang :headbang

Thanks for the confirmation that 1967 was the last time we were down to the wire. I just posted as much on the "Twins/Sox Duel" thread, based on what I have been told by my Elders and (mostly) Betters in Sox Fandom.

I don't think there is anything wrong with emotional roller coastering... as long as every Sox loss or miscue doesn't lead to a pointless "This Team Sucks" of "Fire Jerry" tirade. Emotional roller coastering is a lot of what the long baseball season is all about. I'll be terribly disappointed if we don't take the division this year, but I'll take a meaningful season in contention over a meaningless season out of it by August every time even if it hurts many years.

Go Sox!

excellent post.

still remember 1967 -- a one of a kind race with the Tigers, Twinkies and Red Sox.

Sox had the upper hand -- but no hitting.

finally caught up to them when they lost the last five games -- a double-header to the awful Kansas City Athletics and a three-game series at home to the even worse Washington Senators.

1977 was great fun in July and August, but, you're right, the Royals kicked it in gear in September and it was over. Brett, McRae, Amos Otis were more than we could overcome.

So this is special.

ENJOY the ups, tolerate the downs.

This four-game series with the Twinkies will be a legit playoff series.

another reminder of my age...

I remember that race very well - every day checking the standings as soon as the Trib came - there were no sports stations or anything else back then - and I remember the feeling when we lost the doubleheader to the KC As.

KC has owed us since then and it is now pay back time.

Go Sox!

since you are another elderly geezer here, based on what you have posted, you have to be almost exactly my age. Those losses to the Senators were just the twisting of the knife in the gut.

As I recall, nothing was settled until the last day, the very last game - someopne had a double header - and Detoit lost and Boston won and that is how it finished.

And talk about no hitting - Yaz won the triple crown, right?, with a 301 batting average - think the kids today could follow the game when only one batter in the entire league hit over 300? Maybe that is where we learned patience!

Great post. The season could have turned out a lot worse considering how it started. We could have cleaned house and be in 4th place. Its miraculous that we're in first place considering how we play to the level of our competition so lets just enjoy that. :drink

Who remembers 1968?

the Sox traded for Tommie Davis and Looie Aparicio to upgrade the offense

still had Horlen, Peters and John to pitch

Then they started the season with 10 straight losses and went directly into the tank.

That's why you have to enjoy every moment of this season -- despite the twists and turns

what I remember about 1967 is the way that team had to scratch for runs, pitch and play defense.

Nobody could hit the ball out of the park. Don Buford and Ken Berry led the team in hitting at .241 (entirely different era, but still a remarkably low number). Pete Ward had 18 home runs and 62 RBIs to lead the club.

in the end, the offense just died. I think that KC team had young Reggie Jackson and Rick Monday and maybe even Catfish Hunter. Washington had nothing. Maybe Frank Howard and Mike Epstein.

Coming off 1967 down to the wire race, the 10 straight losses at the start fo the season were an anvil toss to the stomach and started the downward spiral that resulted in 1970.

let's hope the Sox give us a final three weeks that we'll be talking about 20 years from now

this season has been as up and down and all over the place as any I can remember

But they have perservered. Somehow

Now with the Twinkies in town it's Show Time.

should be great theater. Hope the place is packed, especially on a half price night

I remember the headline in the Sun Times when the Sox finally won after losing the first ten games in 68

SOXWINSOXWINSOXWINSOXWIN

wrapped around from back to front in "war is over" sized font.

we got the Trib, I don't remember seeing that, damn that was a keeper!

Yankees-Red Sox 1978. I hate both of those teams, but that was a pennant race. Giants-Dodgers in 1951, with Bobby Thompsons shot heard round the world. That was a pennant race. This? The 76-66 White Sox vs the 76-66 Twins? I guarantee you, outside of Sox/Twins fans, no one cares about this race. Maybe Yanks fans, just so they know who they get to obliterate in Round 1...

How can you say they aren't living up to what they said at Soxfest. They have gone out and gotten Carl Everett, Robbie Alomar, and Scott Sullivan. Who has done more to try to win? Plus they have made a bunch of little pick ups with an eye on the future with guys like Pantiagua, and Mike Riviera. Management can't help how the team played in the first half. The field manager and coaches are supposed to be responsilbe for that, but they have done what they could in the second half to get key players without giving up the big prospects.

But the players preformances are not the fault of the front office. Blame guys like Gary Ward (and they did), Jerry Manuel, and Bruce Kimm. The front office got a lot of players for Jerry, and for whatever reason most of the offense just flat out stunk in the first half of the year.
