I like Basto in WS, he'll only be 21 I believe. Are the Sox high on him?

He's one of the biggest mysteries to me in the system in that regard.

Drafted 5th round and highly considered. Was terrible defensively at SS, so they moved him to 3B. They promoted him to A ball in 2013 and he hit .190 with no power. Scout sort of hinted to me in 2013 he really flopped, and I kind of write him off to be honest.

Then, they promoted him to W-S anyway for 2014, and he improved a lot at the plate (.263 AVG, 7 HR, didn't walk much but made some contact). That was a surprise. Then when Ravelo elected winter ball over AFL, Basto took the AFL slot despite being just 20... and played first base, which he had never done before. Put up an .856 OPS in the AFL, though in pretty small sample size (41 PA).

I don't know what to make of the guy, to be honest. He's still just barely 21 with only about 1.5 seasons' worth of pro games. Defensively he's not a SS at all, not sure about 3B either, and doesn't seem to have a ton of power for 1B. But the Sox keep challenging him.

If I remember correctly, he was also playing a little bit of LF and RF a little bit down at WS.

Yikes, not a lot of offense there

I disagree on the offense. Narvaez can hit quite well and is repeating the level, Barnum should grow into some power, Michalczewski, Peter has a nice feel for hitting, Engel has lots of potential, and Jacobs can pound that level. Really only Walker looks like a hole. Should actually be a pretty strong lineup. Heck even Jirschele is an unusally good hitter for a minor league bench guy.

A few arms to watch too.

Hard to guess the rotation for sure, but my dart throw says Fry-Clark-Dykstra-Wheeler-Bucciferro, with possibly Brennan or Heidenreich later. That should actually be a darn good CAR-level rotation, performance-wise. And Fry, Clark and Wheeler are legitimate prospects.

Not that he deserves to be at a higher level, but sucks to see Walker still at A+ ball.

Also, looks like they are sticking Basto in the outfield this season? Do you think they will try to have him at a set position this season?

So Brett Austin is repeating A ball. Also, this makes things intriguing for Kanny, because there will be some key names left off the full season teams no matter what.

And where the heck is Terance Marin? I'll have to check in with him and see what the story is.

My best guesses on Kanny's roster, now that the other three are essentially in place (and assuming they go 13 pitchers like the two teams above them)...

C Brett Austin

1B Ryan Jones

2B Ryan Leonards

SS Eddy Alvarez

3B John Ziznewski

OF Louie Lechich

OF Zach Fish

OF Michael Suiter

DH Mason Robbins

B1 Sean O'Connell ©

B2 Toby Thomas

B3 James Baldwin III

SP Jordan Guerrero*

SP Chris Freudenberg

SP Thaddius Lowry

SP Luis Martinez

SP David Trexler

SP/RP? Aaron Bummer*

RP Tanner Banks*

RP Ben Brewster*

RP Andrew Mitchell

RP Tanner Mendonca

RP Connor Walsh

RP Yency Almonte

RP Brannon Easterling

That would leave the following players unassigned, some of whom are prospects and some not:

True prospects (in my view)...

RHP Spencer Adams (likely back to rookie ball, they said they'd take it easy with him)

OF Micker Adolfo (no surprise, should be in rookie ball)

RHP Zach Thompson (seems should be ready for A ball, just nowhere to put him)

RHP Matt Ball

RHP Peter Tago (command issues)

RHP Terance Marin (should have been AA, maybe he's hurt?)

INF Jake Jarvis (rookie ball most likely)

OF Antonio Rodriguez (could be in A ball, hard to say vs the 4 I put in there)

RHP Victor Done (could use more rookie ball time)

Marginal guys...

OF Louis Silverio

RHP Yelmison Peralta

RHP Evin Einhardt

RHP Lucas Shearrow

RHP Tyler Barnette

RHP Josh Goosen-Brown

LHP Mike Gomez

OF Michael Danner (could be in Kanny)

OF Jacob Morris (could be in Kanny too)

INF Christian Stringer

INF Juan Silverio (could be the BHAM 3B)

INF Nick Delmonico (could be the BHAM 3B)

RHP Matt Cooper

RHP Kelvis Valerio

INF Ethan Gross

LHP Devon Davis

RHP Brad Salgado

Org guys...

C Ryan Plourde

INF Audry Santana

INF Victor Velazquez

C Zach Fisher

RHP Brett Bruening

OF Nolan Earley

1B Tyler Williams

And then a bunch of the younger LatAm guys for rookie ball of course.

Couple things: Love the aggressiveness for Brian Clark at WS. I really like him as a sleeper prospect. 2nd, I'm pretty sure Merkin said that Adams is for sure going to Kanny.

I like it if they plan on having him start, less excited if they're pushing him as a potential fast moving reliever.

the thing is, the FO wants to keep it slow for Adams, but lets think of it this way, i know i am a homer and rooting for Adams, but what if he comes out blazing. just utterly destroying the comp there. the org may not have a choice to move him up.

i really truly think he is going to open a lot of people eyes and move up quickly.

I think that is a problem that they would love to have.

W-S announced their rotation: Dykstra, Fry, Leyer, Bucciferro, Heidenreich

That means Wheeler and Clark both to the pen, which surprises me a bit.

Trexler should be starting for Kanny. Brewster and Mitchell in their pen I'd think. Barnette not sure, marginal guy.

I'm a little surprised Heidenreich gets a slot, and I thought Robin Leyer would be in the pen (he's been a 2-pitch pitcher at best, unless something has changed). But then I didn't watch these guys all spring either, maybe they know something we don't.

It's odd though, the Sox seemed to say good things on both Clark and Wheeler. It's certainly possible one or both slide into the rotation during the year.

I think they both will be in the rotation by mid season. And Kanny's team has been released.
