If Drabek threw 97 like he did in HS, he may be someone you must keep around to see if you can make something out of him. But 27 year olds who throw 91 with little control have very small upside.

I think there is an excellent chance he clears waivers and goes to Charlotte, but if not, I can't imagine Hahn losing any sleep over it.

Haven't checked Drabek's stats in this game but as of yesterday he had pitched like 2 innings total and has given up 9 hits. The guy had so high a ceiling and then the bottom just fell out. Is there something there the Sox think can be fixed?

He's had 2 Tommy John surgeries, most recently in 2012. That's an awful lot of developmental delays and probably makes me think that when he originally came up his early struggles wound up with him overthrowing things and developing bad habits. He's probably not even back to where he was in 2011 yet and the Sox probably do feel like there's still something there.

The funny thing is that Sanchez has been as bad or worse as Quintana and Verlanders their own version of the D Rose story but Greene and Simon have almost covered up for it, along with Lobstein, Cespedes, Gose, JD Martinez and Iglesias.

dombrowski on a pretty incredible run as GM...despite all the bone-headed Illitch longterm deals like paying Verlander $140 million more.

Well Quintana sucked today. Not much you can do about that. Sometimes you just have these games.

People love to blast me for living in the past, but Buehrle was a great example for guys like Quintana. Wish he was here to teach him how to pitch more efficiently and reach the next level.

I feel like the Sox need to go 5-2 this home stand to get just any sort of life or momentum.

You got it.

I mean, 4-3 would be ok, but if two of the losses are because of a baserunning mistake or a bad manager, it' still going to feel like it's not enough.

Always something with this team.

As I posted in the pre-game thread; Quintana's velocity has been down 4 - 5 mph, on his fastball, at least the last couple of starts.

Perhaps that accounts for his "nibbling". He's probably trying to get guys to swing at bad pitches, because any fast ball in the zone

is likely to get hit hard. I missed the first 40+ pitches today. Was he still around 88 - 90?

We may say Rodon sooner than we thought. They might as well bring Johnson with him.

I didn't pay attention to every pitch but definitely saw some at 91-92 today. Certainly not out of the range we saw last year.

I started watching the game when he had already thrown over 40 pitches. I didn't see one fastball over 90.

That Fangraphs graph is pretty neat. I'll have to check that out. Thanks.

And I tink that makes a lot of sense. I saw the Saturday game and the Tigers were hitting him hard even though they were outs but today he went two scorless and no hits but folks said he was it hard for outs. I wasn't vounting on Rodon already and thought maybe Petricka was coming up

Balta was off by a year....but he definitely should have seen any velocity rebound almost 3 years removed from that surgery.

Not everyone recovers on same schedule. Liriano went under in 2006 and didn't get his average velocity back to 93 until 2010.

Obviously there are other things going on in Drabek's case since he wasn't as successful on his first callup and he's had 2 rather than 1, but at least leaves a little reason to hope he could turn into something useful. If not, not a big loss.
