With a first pick at #10, it is much harder to pull off a underslot signing that adds something meaningful to use later. Last year the #10 pick was a $3.2 million slot. What can you realistically save there without a pretty big overdraft? That is much easier in the top few slots to do, where you have a lot more slot value to worth with. IMO the only way this really would work is if there was an injured SP falling, who was willing to sign underslot, or was such a value at your slot price that he was worth the chance.

I just looked it up, the #10 pick carries a slot of just under $3.4 million. #26 is $2.1 million. #49 is almost $1.3 million.

I think this is how I want those first 3 picks to go

10. Nolan Jones, SS/3B, HS

26. Zach Collins, C/DH, Miami

49. Matt Thaiss, C, UVA

I wouldn't be against that at all. If Senzel is available at 10 I would love that pick or if not him Jordan Sheffield. Zach Collins at 26 & Thaiss at 49 would be nice because its a deep catching class. Sox have shown their ability to identify pitchers in later rounds at 86 I still think there would be a couple questionable but high ceilings picks the sox could push for.

It would be difficult, and you're probably right. Best to just draft best player available.

But,please, no reaches

I would love that haul but there's no way Collins is going to be there at 26. He's hitting .425 with 9 hrs and a 48/24 BB/K ratio in in 170 PAs (a .587 oba!). He's improved all 3 years in college, comes from a major program, hits lefty and has a chance to stick at catcher. I know, stats aren't everything and his D is a question mark. Still...that's a pretty solid profile and there are very few if any college bats performing at that level this year. He keeps it up and I could even see the A's taking him at 6.

You should all check out Joey Wentz. He's a two way player from Kansas. He's 6'6 210. He has one of the better swings in the draft (L/L) and shown some power potential but he's making some serious noise on the mound. He hasn't allowed an earned run all season and gave up his first hit last night. He can throw up to 95 and his last start he struck out 13 in 7.

Should be a good pick in the comp/second round. I don't see him being a first round pick, being a two way player. He's better than Trey Ball at the plate and on the mound.

*******

Jason Groome pitches on Saturday.

Would you say they are similar types of players?

Just my two cents, there are some superficial similarities--lefty bat with blend of speed and power, but as noted Ray is a much, much better prospect than Mitchell ever was. Ray has good plate discipline and is a legit CF prospect where Mitchell swung at everything within 10 feet of the plate and would have almost certainly wound up in left or right. Ray is polished, Mitchell was a project from the beginning.

Ugh, how I hated the Mitchell pick. That was the nadir of Kenny's toolsy outfielder phase in my mind, and it has nothing to do with missing out on Trout (ironically, as it turned out the ultimate toolsy outfielder). Mitchell had whiffed about a third of his ABs at LSU. Yes, he was raw from being a football player first and foremost, but if anyone has examples of successful players who had that kind of a K rate in college I would like to see it. Especially in that age of offensive production at the collegiate level.

Mitchell was a college player who was still high-school raw. He was spending half his time playing football. That was the problem with that pick.

Scout 1-42 draft rankings v2.0

I still think if Sheffield is there at 10 and Senzel is gone the sox take him, also appreciate the undersized comp to Stroman. Buddy Bell and Co really like Vandy as a program, as he said on a recent SSS podcast interview. Zack Collins listed at 20 on both recent rankings or Thaiss at 26 would be a nice get as the system lacks a future front line back stop. Bryan Reynolds is all over the board between this ranking and mlb's recent listing doubt he makes it 49 all though that is just 8 spots later then he is listed here. Ben Bowden at 86 would be a solid get as well keeping with the Vandy theme and with his recent struggles and demotion to the pen it doesn't seem too crazy to think he lands there mlb currently has him listed at 71.

10 - Jordan Sheffield

26 - Zack Collins or Matt Thaiss

49 - Bryan Reynolds

86 - Ben Bowden

sign me up.

Nice to see my man Jake Rogers in the top 100. Best defensive college catcher I've seen in ages. Catches everything and you can't run on him. Very athletic. While his offense this year has been a lot better than depicted in the write-up, he has a goofy leg kick that will hold him back offensively unless he can be coached out of it.

Joey Lucchesi had 17 strikeouts in 8 innings last night. At least 15 scouts were in attendance, a lot of people think he will be a 8-12 round type of guy

I'll keep an eye on him. Looked him up sounds intriguing

He had a national scout at one of his games a couple weeks ago from what I heard, not sure about this past outing.

105 strikeouts in 75 innings. I am hoping SEMO is able to make it to regionals so he gets a chance to face a big time school

Trying to read up on Miami C Zack Collins. I like Collins at 10. Is that about where he'll land? I've seen some mocks say so and some not even going in the first round. What are y'alls thoughts on Collins? Sure would be nice to have a good left handed catching prospect with some big bat potential.

Zack Collins is my guy at 10 as well. He can rake from the LH side and has big time on base skills. He has plus power potential and gets on base at like a .500 clip. He has also improved his defensive skills.

Seems like a no brainer but I don't know much about these prospects as I don't follow the baseball draft as much as the NFL draft. We're also s month away so I'm starting to dive in deeper. I seen Delvin Perez mocked to us but that seems like a big stretch that he'd make it to 10. I want a hitter badly but I'd be ok with a pitcher as BPA because we can develop pitching. Collins sounds like Schwarber sort of (really good bat) but better at catching no?
