He's at 22 innings now, which would leave 138. Double edged sword...you need him to win, but will it be a Strasburg situation come September? Personally, I start him Friday in Oakland. If starting him now gets him shut down at 150 innings, then so be it. He needs more experience starting at the big league level and they shouldn't let him rot away in the bullpen. I'd protect him by pulling him early in games where he stinks...and that'll happen once in a while. He's a big kid. Physcially, it would be like taking two weeks off from running ,then decide to do some sprinting. It would not be the optimally way to go physically. Spread out over the next 5.5 months, you don't know what he can or cannot handle. His performance will answer that. Right now, the Sox need wins. If the Sox are out of it on September 15, by all means, shut him down. But if his stuff is good and he's feeling ok in a pennant race, he needs to pitch. 190 through a World Series isn't that high. But there needs to be a balance of what's good for him and good for the team. In my opinion, monitoring him as they go, 160 in the regular season, and 30 more in the postseason isn't abuse. With Danks and Noesi pitching in the rotation, the Sox are not going to make the post-season. With Rodon in instead of one of them, at least you have a legitimate starter giving the team a chance to win. The Sox cannot afford to "save" him until the end of the season because then the hole they have dug themselves will be even worse. Let him pitch until he hits whatever the inning limit is.
