No 6 man rotation option?

I continue to genuinely hate the 6 man rotation. It cuts down on both the bench and the bullpen to the point where both of them are undermanned.

Not a true 6 man rotation but sort of what the Sox are doing now to compensate for double headers and suspensions . Maybe a week to 10 days between starts for Rodon rather than 5 days rest. I think we'll see some form of that through the heavy part of the schedule without days off until there comes a time that regular starts for Rodon would guarantee him not passing whatever innings limit he has.

Stop and think about this though, if Rodon is taking up a roster spot but is going 7-8 days between starts, that leaves us with a 4 man bench and a 6 man bullpen. Both of those slots can use an extra person but usually people go with the bullpen. You can make it work through short stretches but a 6 man rotation really means that you starters have to go 6-ish innings every game because you don't have enough arms in the bullpen to manage the normal wear and tear of guys needing days off and extra inning games.

If Rodon's BIGGEST issues right now are command of his fastball AND developing more confidence in his change-up (enough to use it 7.5-12.5% of the time), then how is building his time in between starts to an abnormal amount going to aid his development?

He needs to get a feeling for pitching...as he has stated consistently, he just trusts his catchers and fires away with whatever they're calling.

The problem is that he comes into games totally amped up and tries to throw 97-99 MPH instead of finding a comfortable pace where he can get more movement and control of the ball instead of just throwing it.

That change-up will come when he's able to get ahead in counts....or when his fastball velocity starts to fall towards the 92-93 MPH level and he needs another way other than the slider to miss bats and get out of 3-2 counts where the batter can keep fouling off his fastballs.

What I want to see and what we will see are two different stories. They want Rodon at 140-160IP this season. They also want to possibly keep him fresh if we go to the playoffs ... (That if ship is sailing quick). I think I read the other week if he were to start from here on out and average 6 innings a start that basically he'll hit 180IP. So simple math, he needs about 4-6 starts more in the bullpen. So my most likely guess is that come June 1 or so we'll see him in the rotation.

My suggestion is: We've all watched a bunch of Sox games, no? Is it not sometimes obvious when Danks or Noesi is having a bad start? Generally by inning 2 we can see where the ship is sailing. I think the same with Carroll. When his sinker is working hes actually pretty reliable. When it's not, hes hardly effective at all. I wouldn't mind seeing a very flexible back of the rotation -- start by committee type of thing.

Have Sale, Shark, Q, Rodon --- and the 5th spot by who's hot. Throw in Danks as the 5. When he is not on his game? Pull him quickly and throw in Noesi or Carroll. If they are effective they get the next start.

you are going to need more sp's to cover when you use the whole pen.

Noesi feeling better. Has been told to be ready out of bullpen tonight.

Seems relevant to Rodon somehow...

I think you're right. Didnt Robin say some time over ST that a rotation of four lefties was possible?

Could be that the change has been made. Could be because Noesi only pitched 1.2 innings in his last start and he's needed to take Carroll's spot as long man for a day or two. Either way we are getting increasingly close to the turning point where Rodon's ability to have innings available if the team makes the playoffs should be sacrificed for doing anything possible to give the team a shot at the playoffs (Rodon to the rotation). Even if Noesi to the pen is not permanent as of right now, I can't imagine we go more than 1 or 2 bad Noesi starts before Rodon goes into the rotation.

Also, I don't know who is better right now, Noesi or Carroll.

Only an organization as stupid as the Sox would toy with the idea of using him in the bullpen.

I would say you are dead wrong here.

What part of him having an innings limit do you disagree with?

That would mean wasting a lot more of his innings this year.

Whatever they get out of him- control problems, not control problems, command problems, not command problems, will be better than at least a few of the other bullpen members. They also get the benefit of getting him acclimated to playing in the big leagues, pitching against big league hitters, all while saving his innings for when he- relatively soon this year- will be in the big league rotation.

He needs to work on things. It's a lot easier to work on things when you are outside of the pressured environment of MLB.

Doesn't matter if he's the best guy in the bullpen; this is about the future, and this year is over man.

He'll be a lot more major league ready if he's able to throw his off-speed stuff over the plate.

We both have opinions; that's fine. Pitchers have been developed both ways. What the Sox really shouldn't do is jerk him back and forth between roles...unless they are actively hoping for a major arm injury.

That could be the case. And then when you finally get to the pressured environment of MLB are you going to be able to do everything you did in AAA? Or would you be more prepared by getting acclimated with weeks/months already up in the bullpen. I suspect there's no way to know the answer to this.

And regarding his bullpen role, it's not like they're going to be running him out there 3 nights in a row like a LOOGY. His role, by and large will be as a long man- pitching more or less the same as if he was a starter.

All I know is the White Sox know exactly what they are doing. This is a FO that has an absolutely amazing record of protecting the health of their pitchers & developing them. I think the FO is aware that they have a AAA team where he could pitch. They know all about Charlotte, where it is, who's on the roster, how much a plane ticket is to send Rodon back there etc. They know this s***. They are CHOOSING to have their most prized & cherished prospect be with the MLB club...against the better judgement of many armchair GMs. Why not trust them?

Have him on an innings limit in AAA - as a starter.

He needs work on commanding his secondary pitches. That won't happen in a major league bullpen.

Actually the bullpen situation is ideal as it allows the team to choose the exact match ups they want, and they have access to him with their very top coaches and trainers. They aren't trying to do everything with him a thousand miles away through second hand information.

Sox are 12-17

Danks has sucked outside of his last start, which was impressive.

Noesi continuously fudges his already soiled Huggies.

Rodon had an impressive debut Saturday.

So thow does sending Rodon to Charlotte help the Sox or Rodon?

Another question is what kind of message does that send to Rodon?

Noesi has lost his job and deservingly so. The Rodon era has begun so let's just try and enjoy.:)
