Semien isn't going to light the world on fire. Maybe he'll end up something decent, but he's worth trading at this point.

He absolutely tore up the minors and he's currently giving large value in the majors, through both hitting and baserunning, and would be even more valuable for us as we'd be able to fit him in a spot where we have more need and where he's better defensively. Don't think 6 cheap years of that was even worth peak Samardzija but it sure as s*** isn't worth this version.

Fine, but not for a 1 year rental player unless we had a roster and organization ready to compete during that year.

Or a guy you can flip for more or a productive player you could sign long term. Those are the bets you make as an organization and shockingly not every trade ever works in favor of the White Sox m

Yea and the guy that were hoping to flip in this brilliant strategy is off to a terrible enough start that the strategy now looks laughable even if he gets in a groove in June.

Flipping this player worked just about as well as flipping this house in 2007.

6 years control doesn't necessarily equal 6 cheap years.

I want to defend the Shark and that trade but he hasn't shown us he is anywhere near the top of the rotaton pitcher we were led to believe we were getting. Very troubling. Is he hurt?

On the surface it was an awesome deal, pretty universally loved by fans and experts. Unfortunately you can't make trades with the benefit of a time machine.

Show me the post where you knew this would happen. I'll hang up and listen.

Not sure I buy the whole thing about signing him long-term. He's repeatedly stated his ambition to go to free agency, where 99% of the time the player will go with the highest bid. The Sox weren't going to massively save on signing him while he was a Sox player as opposed to signing him through free agency. They would, however, have had an extra year to evaluate him. This was all about competing this year, which given the huge holes on the roster, was ambitious at best. It hurts even more that you give away someone like Semien, exactly the sort of player who the Sox have failed to develop. I think he'll start adding more walks soon as well which will make him even better.

I always like Semien because of the OBP potential. He was probably our best hitter in the minors at working the count along with Ravelo. I understand the sox philosophy, but they need to have a more integral part of a plan for more patient hitters.

For the record, I'd still do that trade 10/10 times.

6 overall cheap years. Probably looking at about $15-20m max, if he's really good. And then you're happy to pay that. Or about what Samardzija is looking for for one year.

Oh joy, now we have to deal with another 20 pages on how this terrible idea is something the white sox should do.

I can't come up with parameters of any deal that makes sense for the White Sox to my eyes unless Samardzija gives the White Sox a large hometown discount that he wouldn't give the Cubs. Otherwise, moving anyone of even minor value from the White Sox's system for Samardzija seems silly to me and a much worse option than going and spending that huge, 9 figure money on someone like Shields or Scherzer.

Marcus Semien for 1 year of Jeff Samardzija continues to make no sense for the White Sox.

It makes us slightly worse next year most likely in the lineup (Sanchez becomes your full time 2b, have to go sign a utility infielder just to back up Gillaspie), which is even worse in a way than Trading Anderson since trading for Samardzija is such an "all in on 2015" move.
