From Fangraphs' Fringe Five Prospects:

Junior Guerra, RHP, Chicago AL (Profile)

There are a number of comments one can make regarding the right-handed Guerra which are both (a) entirely factual but also (b) largely improbable in context with each other. Here’s a selection of such comments, in no particular order:

He made his Triple-A debut last week.

He’s 30 years old.

He regularly hits 95 mph as a starter.

His secondary pitches are at least average.

He pitched professionally in Spain and Wichita.

He’s produced the sixth-best strikeout rate in the minors.

The White Sox signed Guerra to a minor-league deal this offseason out of the Italian League. He’s produced strikeout and walk rates of 36.6% and 6.5%, respectively, over 24.2 innings between Double- and Triple-A. Below is an example of his changeup, which 86-mph pitch he’s using to strike out Cleveland prospect James Ramsey

His 2015:

11.9 K/9 to 1.8 BB/9 at Birmingham, 2.29 ERA

13.1 K/9 to 4.1 BB/9 at Charlotte, 2.45 ERA

Could we see him in Chicago this year?

Brewers promoted him to their major league roster. Annoying we lost him for nothing for no real reason, could have been a contender for our 5th starter.

If he was the White Sox 5th starter, they would be looking for a 5th starter. He couldn't make the Brewers.

Interesting, because he's now 3-0 through 5 starts with a 3.30 ERA, 3.14 FIP, 3.76 SIERA, 9 K/9, 3.6 BB/9.

The Sox didn't want to lose him. They tried to sneak him off the 40 man roster.

And yet they've protected lots of marginal players over the last 3-4 years.

Surely, the Mets and Yankees didn't want to lose Quintana, but he got caught up in a numbers game and then the PEDs stuff as well. Of course, the odds of Guerra having a career war in the same vicinity as Jose are approximately 1 in 500,000.

They didn't try very hard, considering some of the stiffs on the 40 man.

Cooper didn't want a thing to do with Guerra....but he kept Noesi around for a year and is always willing to pitch Scott Carroll

This org. can't even properly evaluate its own players.

s*** like this happens. They lost this guy. They also signed Quintana and Miguel Gonzalez for nothing.

It happens when you don't particularly value fantastic minor league stats because of silly baseball truisms. We all know about Quintana, which was obviously great, but was also years ago. And Guerra has pitched significantly better than, and has 5x the team control of Gonzalez, hence the different trade interest.

Plus, Guerra has significantly outpitched Gonzalez.

Controlling Guerra, watching him dominate Charlotte, calling him up and barely letting him pitch despite plenty of room in the rotation and pen and then dumping him, is just another symptom of this underperforming organization.
