southsider2k5
Is he worth sacrificing two years of international signings? This would mean we couldn't sign anyone in this July 2 class over $250k.
caulfield12
If Moncada wasn't, then it's unlikely that this guy is... http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/pro...rusney-castillo Remember how much the Red Sox invested in this guy? Well, he's in AAA. Part of it was injury related...and the logjam in the major league outfield in Boston, but there haven't been many under 22-23 guys who just came into MLB and dominated. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/125039124/re...debut-on-monday And speaking of Moncada, he's going to debut Monday for the Greenville Drive (Sally League, Low A) Edited May 18, 2015 by caulfield12

Would lose out next year for sure but I think the system will be changed by 2017.
caulfield12
That's a pretty big gamble to take...and, if the system's going to be changed again in 2017, then every front office (especially the big pocket ones) has got to be thinking the same exact thing. Which won't work in favor of the White Sox. That said, we could use another talented outfielder. Eventually, maybe...one of them will make an impact at the major league level if we throw enough darts at the wall.
southsider2k5
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 17, 2015 -> 08:50 PM) I didn't think it would dictate this year at all. They could bid on this guy and sign their rumored guys. Would lose out next year for sure but I think the system will be changed by 2017. It absolutely would. Anything before June 15, budgets into this "year". That would put us out for this July 2 and next July 2's classes. They already are rumored to have two guys wrapped up for this July 2, so I really don't see this rumor being true.
caulfield12
Martinez, who trained with the International Prospect League in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, will work out for scouts Wednesday and Thursday (this was LAST week). It's unclear if the outfielder, who played two seasons for Las Tunas in Cuba, will sign during the current international signing period or wait until the next period that begins on July 2. There has been a flurry of movement on the Cuban market in recent weeks. Two weeks ago, top Cuban pitching prospect Vladimir Gutierrez, 19, established residency in Mexico and registered with Major League Baseball. The right-hander, who defected during Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico, will be subject to the international signing guidelines when he is declared a free agent by MLB. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/124052414/in...e-cuban-players

If they could convince him to wait until July 2, then it would work. We are fairly close to the "no signing period" between the two July 2 sessions, I seem to remember it going into effect shortly after the draft last year, so that will help push it out. It will be disappointing if the Sox go in on him and don't make a larger impact with signing more of the higher profile July 2 prospects. Many of them are already spoken for and it seems a waste to go over unless you go over far enough to make it worth losing out on the next two seasons of prospects. The reason I mention that is simply because the rumor was that he was going to sign next week. If he physically signs next week, that means he signed before that period and falls into this year. If he were to simply "agree to terms" but sign on July 2 or later, it pushes into the next year, and would still allow the team to bring in their kids from Latin America that they have deals with already. Hopefully, this is what they are thinking. If they land him as well as their other "agreed upon" deals with international guys, it'd be a great July 2 class. They'd most likely have to sit out next year but they may have a big amateur draft pool next year if Samardzija leaves. I've always thought that a gamble like this was worth taking but the Sox haven't typically done what I'm advocating.

The problem with this strategy is that in order to make it worth your while, you have to just go all out, spend an insane amount of money, which the Sox likely don't have nor would do. You can't just go over the bonus limit by $500,000. To make it worth losing the next two years of major international signings, you have to blow past by millions, IMO. Martinez is 20 years old and now the top rated international player. Odds are he would be a very high pick in the MLB draft if he were to have gone that way as well. Boopa1219
I think that if there White Sox are ever going to go all in on the international market this is the year to do it. I like the players that I they have been attached to so far, especially Franklin Reyes, who's power tool is a legit 70 right now but they should go all in on Martinez. I trust MLB's evaluations and they have all five of his tools at 60+. Martinez could be a huge addition to the future of the organization and would give the team a nice building block going forward. I remember watching the Braves play everyday on TBS growing up and seeing Andruw Jones make at least two defining plays that would help the Braves win. This has to be the team's top priority in the international market. The Jorge Soler and Yoan Moncada deals would serve as good references for the team, Alvarez is my favorite player on the market and I would love for the Sox to sign him but his fate might already be sealed as he has been connected to the Dodgers for a few months now but I hope Rich Hahn and Marco Paddy do their best to pry him away. I am writing something about the White Sox, July 2nd plans and since more info has come out about Martinez, I will write a quick blurb about him.
