A thought about a teardown

I don't think that a complete teardown is the answer. I think that the more pressing issue is getting a coaching and development staff that will actually coach and develop players. If you look around this team (with the exception of a couple of guys), there is a lot of talent in place. Guys that have either had a good deal of success at the major league level (Samardzija, Melky, Alexei) or have had a great deal of success in the minors (Eaton, Avi).

This team came out of spring training looking like they hadn't worked on anything at all and things haven't gotten any better. Maybe its just me, but I think that rather than trading away the whole team and starting over, they should keep a lot of the players that are on the roster and spend the offseason getting rid of KW and replacing Robin, Steverson, Vince Coleman, and Buddy Bell.

Just one man's opinion.

I agree that a new coaching staff is in order; not that they deserve all the blame but the team's attitude is clearly not right and changes are required. I'm also not sure what Buddy Bell has ever done to keep his job.

The primary reasons that we're worse than we thought have been the premature deaths of Eaton, Cabrera, and Ramirez. Everyone else has either largely done what they're supposed to, or it isn't that surprising that they're worse (Avisail). Eaton has been slowly climbing out of the hole he dug, but he's also the biggest heinie bird, and if we don't find a staff who can keep him on track, he might keep flying in circles until he disappears up his own rear end forever.

The offense is the worst in the league and the team doesnt seem to get its own head out of its collective ass. Thats the manager and the hitting coach's jobs right there.

Have you been hearing anything about what is happening behind closed doors?

We may not be seeing wins but I do believe the offense is showing signs of waking up. I hope that they start hitting on at least 6 of 8 cylinders pretty soon. Defense and running are different animals all together and not good. But, I still feel there is hope. I also think we will see some moves made soon

I disagree and think they will have to start from scratch to fix this. Or at least something very close to doing so.

I'm not opposed to trading a couple of guys to try to bring more talent into the minors, but that has to be done in conjunction with replacing the player development staff. No point in bringing new talent into a system that isn't going to teach that talent the right way to play the game.

Give me a tear down/blow up/fire sale immediately. And if the sox can't give me that, then at least have Ventura and Kenny Williams removed during the offseason.

For the most part, I agree with your statement. I do think Alexei is just old and it's time for him to go. He really can't hit anymore and his Defense is declining. A sign age is catching up. We would've been wise to trade him last year when his value was quite high. We need more offense. We cannot win with a collective OBP sub .300 a negative team WAR (not sure if that's still the case, was a few days ago), and being dead last in offense in just about every category. This will not all turnaround with a new coaching staff. Guys like Flowers, Gillaspie, Beckham, Ramirez, Sanchez cannot make up half of a major league roster. Maybe 1 or 2 could play on a roster, but not 4-5. None of those guys belong starting at the big leagues. Our minor leaguers don't look much better, unfortunately. Therefore, we do need to get some new players in. In order to do that, you need to trade something another team wants, and no other teams wants anything to do with those guys. I'm staunchly opposed to moving Sale, but in order to get something of value, we might need to move Quintana and/or another valuable piece.

As for coaching, the current staff is bad and they need to go (exception Cooper). I honestly don't know why the Sox can't bring in a guy like Gardenhire. He had a lot of success with some mediocre to slightly above average ball clubs. The Cubs saw Maddon come available and immediately picked dropped their manager and picked him. We need a little bit of that, and unfortunately, that's not going to happen with current ownership.

When the Twins were doing bad under Gradenhire they also started firing people who weren't doing the job in their farm system.

Eventually they fired some people in the minors.

BTW this was interesting.

I liked both of those articles. Assume that Chicago references was to the Cubs. Reaffirms what I think needs to be emphasized a lot more around here, he is focused on fundamentals. I don't agree with the proposition that some players should never have to bunt because they don't know how to, e.g. Alexei (and im not referring to power hitters). The Sox are abysmal when it comes to fundamentals on defense, running the bases, bunting, etc. That stuff starts with the coaching staff (majors and minors).
