Of course, it was an overpayment, but they just came off of a Stanley Cup. Immediately, that puts your players, if you want to keep them, at a higher premium. There was no reason to believe that Bickell wouldn't improve the next season. In fact, most thought the playoffs were a jumping off point. AND, if I remember correctly, he even took a lower contract with the Hawks because he wanted to stay. I believe there were bigger contracts out there.

So, who is a better GM? I can't answer that. There's really no such thing as the BEST GM. Even a blind squirrel sometimes gets a nut. But overall, Stan took a cap-strapped team from Tallon, re-made it TWICE, and won Stanley Cups. I'll even say the 2010 SC should be more on Tallon because they were mostly his players. I will agree, Stan is top 10. I would even say top 5. But he, just like every single person that has had the title GM, makes mistakes.

nice post.

ref the bold, i am not smart enuf to say who is top 10 gm in this hockey world now.

but i will always give credit where credit is due. bowman has done a great job in getting the personnel for Q to use and to get ready for the SC chase and he did it again.

interest question. how does a gm in hockey is or will be rated???

That may have been Bickell's market value, but that doesn't mean the Blackhawks had to pay it. As I recall, that was a lot of the sentiment at the time.

Anyway, no one is gonna be perfect. Bowman is a very good GM.

Obviously Bickell deserves the blame for not preforming and living up to the deal, but Stan also deserves a fair share of the blame.

You are correct in terms of the sentiment, I remember after his playoff run there was just the belief "You can't let this guy walk, he makes to big of an impact when he is on to let this guy walk away." His big body, that huge power forward role was something that was missing from the Hawks, and when Bickell was playing at a high level he was incredibly valuable.

BUT, what makes a GM smarter than all of us is being able to evaluate talent and project future performances. Sometimes you hit, and sometimes you miss, and Bowman and the staff missed big time. Everyone deserves blame.

The goal of the GM is also to have more hits than misses, and clearly we know where Stan & Co. stand.

and i have 2 lousy idea on this... i admit it. it is just me.

i say don't rest on your laurels .... get to work and what have you done for me lately.

i am a harsh task manager,

#Blackhawks lines: 86-19-81, 72-15-88, 29-65-39, 11-16-28. So same as the last few days.

i am going to like to see how they performed

How's is that inconclusive? Puck was in net and then you blew the whistle.

No point in having replay if they cant figure this s*** out. He was waving his arms and blowing his whistle as the puck was in the net.
