ESPN reporting the Blackhawks are struggling to move Brian Bickell (no kidding). The kicker is, the name teams want in order to take the bad money is Teuvo Teravainen.

This would be a mega loser trade.

I would be furious if they move Teravainen in a cap dump. He could probably fetch you a solid young defenseman by himself if we were going that route.

I'm surprised a cap floor team won't take a chance with Bickell for one year, unless they don't want to help the Hawks out. But moving cost controlled assets is not the way to go.

All the teams know the Blackhawks are in a bind and already missing pieces. No one is just going to take Bickell without something to sweeten the deal.

That's fine, but giving up young guys who are already in the NHL (or NHL ready) is just not smart. Bowman and company better hope a guy like Schmaltz is ready or if they are signing Vesey or something. I like Pokka, but if the organization thinks other guys are ahead of him (i.e. Gustafsson, Forsling, etc), you use someone like that to "sweeten" a deal.

If a team was willing to give them an actual piece back in a trade involving Bickell-Teuvo, I would absolutely be listening.

The questions is, what team has a better chance to win another Cup? This core in 2017 or 2018 without Teuvo, but with a couple solid players or another actual D-man? Or this core 5 years from now much older and slower but with Teuvo?

If they do trade Teuvo, I think Stan is saying f*** it. These guys are not getting older or cheaper, now's the last chance to win a Cup, time to go all in.

This cap situation really has the potential to finally do in the Hawks.

Maybe, but if they can just continue to make the playoffs, they still have a shot with their top end talent.

I still maintain their core is too big by one Seabrook. Panarin next season is going to be tough to pay.

If the cap drops, like is being talked about, the team is pretty much capped out, and one of the core has to go.

That's why I think the the Blackhawks will likely expose at least one core player in the expansion draft.

The problem remains, though, a guy like Seabrook or Hossa can still hose the Blackhawks by retiring early even from another franchise.

From what I was reading yesterday, most of the core have no move clauses in their contracts which would prevent them from going in the expansion draft. That may be why they are looking to trade Teuvo now, because he may likely have to go in the expansion draft anyway.

Not all of them. If I had to guess, Crawford, Hossa could be exposed. Nothing is official, but it sounds like we could know about expansion very soon.

The idea of exposing Crawford sucks. He was actually the Blackhawks' MVP.

NHL still up in the air on NMCs, but most seem to think they won't be selectable. Kind of sucks.

Expansion draft doesn't help for this year at least.

Right. On one hand, the cap trouble and shorter contracts help the Blackhawks. On the other, there is little chance of cap relief from the draft. Second City Hockey estimates the Hawks situation is

Forwards (Protected) : Jonathan Toews (NMC), Patrick Kane (NMC), Teuvo Teravainen, Marian Hossa (NMC), Artem Anisimov, Marcus Kruger, (7th to be determined)

Defenseman (Protected) : Duncan Keith (NMC), Niklas Hjalmarsson (NMC), Brent Seabrook (NMC)

Goalie (Protected): Corey Crawford (NMC)

Unprotected Forwards: Andrew Shaw (assuming he is able to resign with the Blackhawks), Kyle Baun, Vinnie Hinostroza, Ryan Hartman, Tanner Kero, Matt Fraser, Mark McNeill, Ryan Haggerty

Unprotected Defenseman: Erik Gustafsson, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Ville Pokka, Kirill Gotovets, Nolan Valleau

Unprotected Goalie: Scott Darling (assuming he is resigned after 2017), Michael Leighton (assuming he is resigned to the AHL), and other goalies who won't be taken in an expansion draft anyway.

That's great for keeping the core together for sure.

Or this diagram I found on twitter covers all of our assumptions

I would expose both Seabrook and Hossa before Pokka and TVR. However, especially in the Hossa case, I think they have an agreement worked out with him to eventually go on LTIR

Totally agree on the end idea.

This offseason, no. But let's see how the season plays out and he'll be turning 33 during the 2017-18 season. Goalies don't usually age well.

They CAN, but I dont think sinking money into that for this team is the right move.

What a postseason run. Really fun because I didn't anticipate honestly with a rookie goalie. Tremendous job even though he wasn't always tested. Their speed really gave every team problems. Pittsburgh was clearly the better team and beat. Happy to see Daley hoist the cup. Happy for Dupuis. Was one of my favorites. Happy for Kessel and glad he got going when it was needed most. Great effort from everyone and shot blocking was amazing.
