If Robin Ventura put a catcher hitting about .175 fifty or sixty games imto the season, into the 2 hole with a team struggling, he would be called a moron. Ventura is trying to fimd a two hole hitter. Melky, Alexei, Beckham, Gillaspie, Shuck, Avi have all hit secomd. What the hell else is he supposed to do?

Why don't you just tell us what the correct philosophy is and who the guy batting secomd should be.

Dick, I understand loyalty as I worship Ozzie still. But why are you such a Robin lover? He's done nothing. He's blah at best. Most of us understand no manager ever born could win with this collection of awful talent, but Robin still appears average at best, keeping that in mind.

At this point he is tryimg to find something that will work. Nothing has as of yet, but he is still trying. That "philosophy" seems pretty sound.

Philosophy is meaningless when you don't have the guys for it. So far no everyone has failed.

Even after last year, I really didn't think Alexei was very coveted by other teams. I doubt there were any offers which gave them much reason to even consider moving him.

But according to Soxtalk, we were getting Kolten Wong and/or Carlos Martinez!

Well, there weren't exactly a plethora of Silver Sluggers at SS also in the top 33% of mlb defenders this past offseason and under affordable contract control for two seasons, which is a pretty ideal commitment for a lot of teams.

But the fact is that year was a bit of an outlier for Alexei, and at a fairly advanced age nonetheless.

I know for one I wasn't surprised by a fairly significant regression. It's doubtful there were many GMs who would have been.
