Dick Allen
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:52 PM) Can he request the release or does the team have to do it? I'm confused by that, sorry. It's part of his contract. Gets him to free agency without the service time or compensation.

Leonard Zelig
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:51 PM) His contract calls for him to be released at the end of the season. Teams releasing players cannot sign them again until May 15th. The team that winds up with Cespedes on the last day of the season will be his ex-team 5 days later. Why would somebody put that in a contract? I don't see the benefit for either side.
ChiSoxFanMike
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:55 PM) Why would somebody put that in a contract? I don't see the benefit for either side. I don't see the benefit either. Does this mean that he wouldn't be able to sign an extension if he were traded here?
Dick Allen
QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:53 PM) Not for a couple of months that would be steep. I don't think I would. But I'm sure there are people who would in a heartbeat. It really would be an interesting trade.
Buehrlesque
I can't see the Sox giving up anything of value for a rental. If the Padres want to give away Upton, or the Tigers Cespedes, virtually for free, then sure. But it's not the Sox MO to do otherwise (unless it's a cheap-o band aid like Youkilis). CarGo, Gomez, Bruce are more in keeping with the Peavy and Rios-style moves that theoretically help now and next year.

ChiSox59
QUOTE (Mike F. @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:56 PM) I don't see the benefit either. Does this mean that he wouldn't be able to sign an extension if he were traded here? It is so he won't have a qualifying offer attached to him. Before the new CBA (when he signed with the A's), this was a much bigger deal. Edited July 30, 2015 by ChiSox59
Dick Allen
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:55 PM) Why would somebody put that in a contract? I don't see the benefit for either side. He becomes a free agent without the required service time, and even if he stayed in Detroit would not be subject to compensation. He basically is betting on himself. Frank_Thomas
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:55 PM) Why would somebody put that in a contract? I don't see the benefit for either side. I don't know it's smart though, his contract prevents his current team to offer a qualifying offer to him to get compensation thus limiting his options as a free agent. Less teams get interested if they lose a draft pick that clause allows him to resign or be a FA to all teams. BlackSox13
I think a better question in reference to Cespedes is; do the Sox want to help the tigers rebuild? That and Cespedes' contract stipulation leaves me with less than zero interest in a trade with Detroit. There are plenty of outfielders the Sox can go after. But I really think it'd be selling at the lowest for Avi and Montas cause I think both will be very good for whatever team has them, hopefuly it's Us. Jose Abreu
Let's be real here, it's not like many of us were thinking about signing Cespedes long-term this offseason anyway. Not with our current group of outfielders, and for the assumed price.
ChiSox59
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jul 30, 2015 -> 02:57 PM) It is so he won't have a qualifying offer attached to him. Before the new CBA (when he signed with the A's), this was a much bigger deal. Plus, the Sox wouldn't have been able to give him a qualifying offer anyway (since they would have theoretically just traded for him), so how is this any different than just a guy who is in the last year of his contract? I don't think this would affect any negotiations with him in the offseason, as someone else suggested.
