BamaDoc
I have seen many people discuss the value of a first round comp pick(myself included) for Smardzija. While perusing box scores and stats I realized Keenyan Walker and Keon Barnum where both sandwich/comp picks. Ouch! Also made me realize we had spent some higher picks on position players, they just haven't worked out as well as we hoped. Not slamming either player. I did have an additional question/hypothetical, if Smardzija accepted the one year qualifying offer and then left after rebuilding his value would we still be entitled to a comp pick? The era has changed. Walker was chosen 47th overall. Barnum was 48th. Today those are middle second round picks. With the changes to the CBA, this pick will be somewhere around the high 20's or low 30's at worst.

Yes he would, assuming the White SOx are willing to offer the QO.

Balta1701
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 20, 2015 -> 10:36 AM) Yes he would, assuming the White SOx are willing to offer the QO. To add a detail - the official MLB Bargaining Agreement document mentions nothing whatsoever about rules for a QO applied in multiple seasons, I checked this a couple days ago. Since it isn't explicitly prohibited the White Sox would therefore be able to offer the QO - it would be the equivalent of offering a QO to a player on a 1 year contract. bmags
Also more interesting since Barnum days is the extra budget this provides. Signing top picks slightly below slot leaves more room to sign more picks in rounds 10 and later that may be legit prospects.

Houston has routinely used this pick to add the equivilant of a middle first round pick by signing their top pick underslot.
