Could White Sox trade some pitching to fill other areas in offseason

Is it out of the question to see the Sox letting Shark go, taking the comp pick, trading Q and then actually signing a mid level starter from FA? A guy like Latos or Kennedy could probably be had on a 1 or 2 year deal while they try to build a little more value for next years free agency. Maybe even a Mark Buehrle goodbye tour or something.

I can't imagine a scenario in which the Sox *don't* bring Mark back this winter, unless he completely reverses course and either signs an extension with Toronto or goes somewhere else (like St. Louis). He's already made it clear he's not retiring after 2015. Buehrle is still incredibly durable and consistent even at his age and would be a great mentor for our young pitching staff.

I can. A 2016 rotation of Sale, Q, Rodon, Samardzija and Danks would not allow room for Buehrle. Plus, there Erik Johnson to take into consideration.

Don't get me wrong, been a huge fan of Buehrle for a long time. If the Sox can move on from Samardzija and find an NL team willing to take on Danks for one season, then the idea of Buehrle becomes much more realistic.

The Sox could roll out a 2016 rotation of Sale, Q, Rodon, Buehrle and E.Johnson. The Sox would still have Montas ( unless traded) at AAA with Fulmer likely joining him at some point. Buehrle would be a good fit to use as a stop gap for 2016 while Fulmer and Montas develop.

I'd take Buehrle over Samardzija and/or Danks any time.

Buehrle has a much better chance increasing his win total pitching for Toronto or St.Louis. Three more good years will get Mark close to 260 wins and a possible HOF induction.

For personal reasons (Mark's dogs aren't allowed in Canada) I would be surprised if he signed there this offseason, but you're right, a competitor would be a really good spot for him.

Like it or not, someone like the Yankees sounds like a good fit to me. He'll eat innings and they'll score. The Tigers could use a starting pitcher. The Red Sox, the Orioles, the Rangers - these teams that have had injuries in their rotation and could improve a lot by having 200 decent innings in the middle of the rotation - they'd be perfect fits and Mark darn well ought to get a couple years at $15 mil per year if he wants it.

however, if the sox are sitting outside the protected top 10, and any front end pitcher, MB included gets a QO. i don't think the sox will go after them.

Good point LDF and I agree. I really hope the Sox can steer clear of of signings that cost draft picks. Especially since the 2016 draft is supposed to be better than this year's.

Samardzija won't be back next year. If they were to find a taker for Danks or traded Q for hitting, there is definitely room for Buehrle.

I really hope you're right about Samardzija not being with the Sox next year.

As LDF pointed out, Buehrle will cost the signing team a comp pick. Imo, not worth it for a pitcher that turns 37 before opening day 2016.

For some people, we should do everything to sign Buehrle regardless of long term ramifications.

I love Mark, but come on.

I'm not certain it's a 100% lock that MB gets a QO. I don't know what Toronto's situation is, but I know they got some money from Miami in that trade and they may not want to pay him $16M or whatever the QO is going to be.

But yeah, if he does get the QO and the Sox don't have a protected pick, I don't sign him unless it's some kind of ridiculous hometown discount.

I thought the top 15 picks, not 10, were protected?

Under the new CBA it is the top 10 picks (can be top 11+ if a team receives a compensatory pick in the top 10 for not signing a previous year's draftee).

Absolutely Q. The future is more important than nostalgia.

The QO will be around 16M+ which is cheaper than Buehrle's 2015 salary of 20M so I'd say Toronto definitely offers the QO.

Given our team needs, Q really needs to be shopped this offseason. I'd love to keep him, but if we can get two legit everyday players back, I think we're a better team for it.

A Sale trade isn't going to happen. Might be more realistic in a year or two if the Sox are still muddling along, and we'd still be able to get a nice return then. No point trading him now, it would be almost impossible to get enough value back.

Trade Quintana? You guys are crazy!

Who the hell would pitch for the Sox next year then??

Chris Sale, Carlos Rodon, Erik Johnson, Carson Fulmer, John Danks, Free agent?, Chris Beck, Francellis Montas.

Not as strong as this year's rotation on paper but could very easily be just as good.

Equally fair question in reply would be "who the he** will play 3b and RF and C and 2b and SS and DH" for the White Sox next year if we don't move him to fill some of those gaping holes.

Quintana will be dealt. The problem is we usually trade or let go the wrong guy. Look at Santiago. Look at Mark Buehrle. Look at McCarthy before he got hurt. In the offseason maybe they could package Q and Danks and Micah, make somebody take Johnny's salary and we get one Puig and Ethier in return. I think the obvious trade is for Ethier and Puig. The question is what do we give up? I say Q, Danks and Micah.

I'd take Eaton over Santiago any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Giving up McCarthy got us a very good Danks before he had shoulder surgery. I would of done the same thing resigning Danks over Buehrle as well. Danks was young and coming off a great year, just injuries got in the way.

It's so easy to say the things you did in hindsight when they were definitely the right moves at the time. (The Eaton trade is a definite)

I would not trade our best pitchers regardless of what people think we may get back. Pitching wins! I think what we will see is Sale-Quintana-Rodon-Johnson and either the Shark or Danks. I doubt Fullmer is ready or Montas for 2016. Now 2017 is a different story

In 2 years, Santiago has a 2.1 WAR with the Angels.

In 2 years, Eaton has a 4.9 WAR with the Sox.

Stop it.

This is according to fangraphs

The comment was made on this post about signing MB for nostalgia's sake. I beg to differ as I think it's his history and continued performance. I would sign him in a heartbeat, but I do not believe he will be signed by the Sox. Our loss

You would give up two starting pitchers and a promising rookie for a struggling outfielder? How much is Ethier or Puig being paid?
