Belle really sticks out to me. My cousin and I were at spring training, he went to take a picture of Mr. Belle.

Mr. Belle (in not such a nice way) asked if my cousin was into men and questioned why he was taking pictures of him rather than the pretty girls there.

He then called him a derogatory name for a gay male and walked up to bat.

He was swell! Oh to have a camera phone back then.

Sure if you're 13 years old. Hatred is reserved for guys like Brett Myers in my mind.

Bingo. Being frustrated that a guy sucks is one thing. Hatred belongs to a special group of guys who really deserve, such as the wife beaters and general scumbags.

They represent people who despite being amongst the top 1% in the world at what they do, aren't as good as the rest of their peers. Totally worth hating.

Damn them for trying hard but not being talented or skilled enough.

Interesting somebody said Santo. Didn't he say he just hated his one season on the Southside? Was miserable? Kessinger was a big bust, too, as a Southside player/manager. I don't know if he hated being a Sox though. He probably did as well.

Santo hated his time with the Sox is true. He hated being moved to second base, hated being benched by Chuck Tanner, just a real ass.

Carlos May told me this story about Santo when I interviewed him.

“The other time was when we got Ron Santo. He was our DH that year. We were in Chicago and it was cold and wet. Dick was hitting 3rd, Bill (Melton) 4th, and Santo 5th. Ron was back in the clubhouse, I don’t know if he was getting loose or doing something but Dick made an out and went back to the dugout. As Dick was sitting down, Ron came out of the tunnel and asked him what the pitcher was throwing. Dick exploded and basically said if he wanted to know what the pitcher was throwing he should have his ass on the bench watching with the rest of us.”

Jerry dybzynski cost the white sox the 83 title

Yeah, I'm surprised he's not despised more, kind of like the Sox version of Bartman. But he's really not.

Greg, I'm with you on Danks. He's a warrior. I can't stand watching him on the mound but what he's doing after the capsule tear is basically unprecedented. He's worked his ass off to get back from it and even though he isn't half the pitcher he was I really appreceate his dediction and love of the game. I can see the dedication to baseball with him. His body betrayed him it really sucks but he could have just easily half assed his rehab and made the same amount pitching in Charlotte are being DFA.

I've not written that in my support of Danks yet, but that is indeed why I love him.

The Sox scored 3 runs in that 4 game series. Hard to blame one guy.

True, but if Dybber doesn't screw up Sox cruise in the final game of the series behind Hoyt. It was Hoyt's year like Baumgartner in the WS last year.

LOL. Why don't u like Hinrich? Ugly guy? Just wondering. He's a pretty good player. Got a lot out of his skill set.

Great story. He probably forgot he wasn't on the Cubs anymore where he was king and knew everybody. He was on a new team. That's an interesting lineup with Allen, Melton and Santo all in a row.

Hinrich has been amazingly awful the past few years. Love him as a person, he's bad now.

That's the nice way of putting it.

For the past few years and prior to this season, I've considered Kirk Hinrich to be the Gordon Beckham of the Bulls. Gets lots of playing time but is no good.

I didn't realize this. Do the fans despise him and boo him? I thought he was kind of the fill in guy who saves the day when Rose is hurt, etc.

Good story. Pretty funny actually from my perspective but yea would've hated it happening to me. I think Belle was probably pretty much a jerk to everyone and frankly I loved his performance on the field. Despite all of Frank Thomas good years I think Belle put up the greatest season in Sox history in 1998. His 2nd half that year was crazy good.

.387 BA.

.451 OBP

.816 SLG

1.267 OPS

48 doubles 49 HR for the season . Led the league in SLG , OPS, OPS+ and Total bases.

Guys like that are exactly why stats aren't why you hate a player.

and i remember when i was taking about him and his personality, i always thought you surround a "problem child" with good company people, it would or could overcome all the negative baggage.

He doesn't get booed, but Gordon doesn't get booed either.

He's not even close to a fill in for Rose. Those were always the scoring PGs.

Kirk's got a place in Bulls history, but after this year he should retire.

That season was amazing but I still have to give the greatest season ever nod to The Big Hurt's 1994. Hard to say how he would have finished without the strike but its real hard to beat a .353/.487/.729 slash line.

Belle '98 - .328/.399/.655/1.055, 113 R, 200 H, 48 2B, 49 HR, 152 RBI, 81 BB, 84 K, 165 wRC+, 7.1 fWAR in 163 games

Thomas '94 - .353/.487/.729/1.217, 106 R, 141 H, 34 2B, 38 HR, 101 RBI, 109 BB, 61 K, 205 wRC+, 7.0 fWAR in 113 games

Thomas '94 pace - .353/.487/.729/1.217, 152 R, 202 H, 49 2B, 54 HR, 145 RBI, 156 BB, 87 K, 205 wRC+, 10.0 fWAR

I've always liked AJ, especially since the 05 playoffs with all the goofy plays that happened, but I've never heard anything as to why he's hated so much. What does he or did he do to be so hated? Can anyone tell some stories?

I have no personal stories, but I guess he's just an unrepentant a-hole. There was a story about him taking a foul tip off his nether regions when he was with the Giants, and kneeing the trainer in the groin when he came over to help.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2005-02...new-sox-enraged

That's really the only concrete thing I know of. The rest of baseball's fanbases hitting him just seems to be a snowball thing. "It was once determined that we should not like this guy, so let's dislike him.

And of course he headbutted Michael Barrett's fist that one time.
