Explain how/why you think the Pirates would want to trade Neil Walker for Adam LaRoche.

Yeah I don't know either, I wanna edit that lol. Don't know what I was thinking.

EDIT: I edited my mock

My thoughts are if the Sox really want to try and compete for the ALC next year, they're going to need a big FA signing and will have to make a couple of noteworthy trades. In the end you have to give something to get something. Cespedes would be ideal here but I don't know if the Sox will buck up for him. I know it's been mentioned before but I think the Cubs are a good trade partner if something like this goes down. They have a plethora of young position players and are in need of young, good cheap pitching.

I'll say this, if the Sox refuse on dealing Q or Sale and they want to contend, then they need at least 3 of these players in trades or FA.

Cespedes

CarGo

Heyward

Longoria

Zobrist

Getting Longoria might mean you deal Q or Fullmer. I'd personally go with Longoria, Cespedes and CarGo. I'd then sign Wieters on a one year deal.

Eaton

CarGo

Abreu

Longoria

Cespedes

Ramirez

Wieters

Thompson

Johnson

Find a way to dump LaRoche (possibly to the Pirates for nobody) and Danks (possibly to the Dodgers for nothing)

There's no reason to be a dick about anything. Just like anyone else in this thread, I'm brainstorming. I don't believe the Sox should try to compete next year, but I'm coming up with ideas for both sides. All of the guys I have listed have been rumored to be available or are FAs.

So contribute something or shut the f*** up.

I'm going to throw it out there, but what about Chris Davis? He's the best hitter available in free agency, can technically play multiple positions (allows both him & Abreu in the lineup in NL parks), and his addition would allow us to go defense-oriented at a couple of spots. Sign Zobrist and trade for a catcher (will use Derek Norris here) and go with something like this:

1. Eaton, CF

2. Zobrist, 3B

3. Abreu, DH/1B

4. Davis, 1B/DH

5. Cabrera, LF

6. Thompson, RF

7. Ramirez, SS

8. Norris, C

9. Sanchez, 2B

Huge question marks in the bottom half of the lineup, but at least they're all strong defenders. But that 1 - 5 would be very potent and could probably carry the load.

Amen.

I like your thinking. I think the Sox should acquire arenado from the Rockies. Try to dump laroche in the mike trout trade somehow. Throw danks in the Bryce Harper trade. The Sox are good

I really like this idea, Davis is the power hitter needed in heart of this lineup behind Abreu. I think with a rebound season from Alexei, decent starts from most of the lineup (which isn't out of the question after this years dormant 1st half showing) I think this lineup with our pitching staff definitely improves a lot of what was wrong this year.

I'm not against Davis, but his contract brings the most risk of any free agent in this class

i have been wondering and just trying to throw some of my ideas out there.

the situation of what the sox should do or would do. this conversation will be debated at no ends until spring training.

as fans, we would all want the sox fo to go out and spend to get this team in a shape to really compete, with the idea of what can be done and hoped. i am extremely guilty of this wishful thoughts. esp now with the northsider in the playoff.

my only respond to that will be.... damn the FO for being short sighted.

now, the fans will hope and pray but the owners will do what they want to do.

so i only see at least one fa signing. a fa to shore up 3b.

i also see some trades of surplus of pitching to pickup players to battle for positions or players who may be ready in a yr.

i really hope i am wrong but i don't see Q being used as a trade chip. his cost control is too valuable for the sox to trade...... seeing how the owners would not sacrifice a cost control player like this.

i hope i am wrong.

Looking back at a lot of posts on here, a lot of people (including myself) pencil in Fulmer to replace Danks mid-season. Thinking about it, it's no guarantee we are able to deal Danks or just stick him in the pen and it is probably more likely that Fulmer replaces Johnson.

Also, I don't think this team needs to target just lefty hitting. Without doing research, it seems like left-handed bats have more extreme split stats than right-handed hitters do. Look at the Jays lineup. Now, I'm not saying we can easily put together a lineup like the Jays, but saying "we need a big lefty bat in the lineup" (while not wrong) is short-sighted. Get the best available bat who doesn't have extreme splits and is available to you.

First of all, I have contributed a lot to this thread.

Secondly, do you honestly believe that we can get Cespedes, Gonzalez, Longoria, AND Wieters while somehow ridding of both Danks and LaRoche?? Come on. I'm sorry if my comment appeared rude, but I'm just saying that there's no way we can get those 4 players and get rid of Danks and LaRoche.

I'm for this if he is willing to take a one-year deal to rebuild value as other Boras clients before him did and he doesn't receive a QO. He won't be coming back from injury this off-season and can get ready and condition for the season as he normally would. Brings some potential if he stays healthy and if the team is bad, they have a trade chip.

Cespedes I can definitely see if they decide they want to add a threat behind Abreu (which we need). Although, with LaRoche in the DH spot, probably means Avi is moved (back-end starter, bullpen piece, or other struggling youngster?)

The first step if the Sox are going to try and contend is to bite the bullet and eat some/all of LaRoche's contract in a trade for anything. If LaRoche is on the team, they are not planning on contending.

The next thing I'd do is try and trade Melky. He has some value, probably not a lot, and they should be able to deal him. Ideally, I'd try to make a deal with Miami with Melky heading that way and Martin Prado heading this way. Their salaries kind of match up and it would be more of the other players involved that make the deal. Maybe Melky and Tyler Danish for Prado and low level prospect.

Next, I'd deal Quintana to the Dodgers and try to get Puig and Barnes.

If that fails, I'd look to Colorado and try to acquire Gonzalez and Rosario. I wouldn't include Quintana in that deal as the Rockies are looking to unload both of them and they shouldn't cost as much in trade value. Maybe Erik Johnson, Tyler Flowers, and Micah Johnson gets it done. I think they can get Rosario back to a decent enough defensive catcher to play him there.

Lastly, I take Pedro Alvarez off the Pirates hands. Maybe giving them LaRoche and eating a big portion of his contract gets it done. That gives the Sox a lineup of(I'm moving Avisail to LF in either trade scenario):

LF- Garcia/Thompson

CF-Eaton

RF- Puig/Cargo

3B-Prado

SS-Alexei

2B-Sanchez

1B-Abreu

C-Rosario/Barnes

DH-Alvarez

SP: Sale, Rodon, Quintana/Johnson, Danks, Fulmer/veteran FA signing.

Despite them wanting to unload them, I could see Erik Johnson going straight up for Rosario if they want to just bring back depth for him but they have a good young 2B already in DJ LeMahieu and I highly doubt they would want Tyler Flowers.

Where would LaRoche go if this happened? The bench I'm assuming?
