southsider2k5
Dan Hayes @CSNHayes 16m16 minutes ago Jeff Samardzija watched footage, thinks has been tipping pitches, particularly fastball. Credits video guy Bryan Johnson for adjustment.
ChiSoxFanMike
Why wouldn't he say this? It's not like he's just going to admit that he's been trash for a good 3/4 of the season. This is bologna IMO. I need to see an improvement over several starts to believe this.
southsider2k5
QUOTE (Mike F. @ Sep 21, 2015 -> 03:10 PM) Why wouldn't he say this? It's not like he's just going to admit that he's been trash for a good 3/4 of the season. This is bologna IMO. I need to see an improvement over several starts to believe this. Because today is much more in line with the rest of his career than the rest of his post ASG starts were. While people can debate the who #1/#2 starter thing before that point, the guy has always been a pretty good pitcher. This isn't like John Danks pitching a shutout. Tipping pitches makes a lot more sense than Samardzija suddenly forgetting how to pitch and becoming the worst pitcher in baseball (which he has been since the ASB). chitownsportsfan
I don't think he's tipping hit pitches so much as leaving hanging breaking balls over the middle of the plate.
Soxfest
Nice to see Jeff make excuses on September 21st.............he has been awful not just on the fastball.

reiks12
how does it take this long for a professional to realize this? How many people are watching videos of him this year trying to figure it out?
Dick Allen
His location has been bad for most of the year.he has thrown a lot of meatballs, but if he thinks he was tipping his pitches, and changed something, that is good too. Whether he really was or not isn't relevant. He should be pitching with more confidence.

Absolutely. I've only watched the MLB.tv highlights lately when he starts, but most of the run-scoring pitches that have been crushed are hanging spinfests. kitekrazy
There's nothing in his previous stats that say "great pitcher". I can't except the hype.

Not just Samardzija, the evidently adored Bryan Johnson. October is a few days away- should have just worried about it over the offseason at this point... I can't except the hype. There's certainly nothing in his previous stats that say worst pitcher in baseball either. At the very least you can say he's been a pretty good #3 pitcher in his career. I definitely didn't predict the end of season disaster, but there was signal in his stats that he was trending downwards even early this season. Dick Allen
His 2015 WHIP is actually lower than it was as a Cub. His K rate is down 1.5 from his Cub days. His walk rate is down 1.5 from his Cub days. He just was never really all that good. Football at ND and pitching for the Cubs apparently makes your reputation a lot better than your results. Football at ND and pitching for the Cubs apparently makes your reputation a lot better than your results. He's walking fewer people but he's also striking out fewer people. That means more balls in play, more reliance on your defense, probably more solid contact, more home runs/PA. You wouldn't have guessed from those numbers he was going to collapse in August, but you did have reason to say "please don't sign this guy long term there's a real big risk here". Lillian
If this explanation regarding tipping pitches is legitimate, I would change my opinion to now, at least favor making a QO. However, I would still hope that the Sox would not try to sign him to a long term, expensive contract. 2nd_city_saint787
How did his splitter look yesterday? Fangraphs put out a pretty solid article 5 days ago basically saying the reason he has struggled is because he is leaving his splitter in the strikezone. Definitely can make the QO though cause he won't accept it.
Panerista
Yeah, I don't buy it. This just sounds like PR to get him some of the potential big money. He should have taken the White Sox earlier offers and we're so lucky he didn't take those offers.
