Cy Young Discussion

I honestly have no idea who wins the Cy Young at this point. I could see any of Greinke, Arrieta, and Kershaw winning it. Greinke's got the ERA, Kershaw dominates them both in advanced metrics, and Arrieta has the best combination of both.

Considering Arrieta has arbitration coming up, does winning the Cy Young affect his salary for the next season?

I wouldn't overthink it. Greinke has been dominating from the start of the season, and hasn't really stopped. Best ERA.

Greinke, Arrieta, Kershaw.

The gap in ERA between Felix and Kluber last year (0.30) was larger than the current gap in ERA between Arrieta and Greinke or Arrieta and Kershaw. Best ERA doesn't guarantee you the win.

There's no danger of him not being a Cub next year, I'm just wondering how that might affect things. I'm still not entirely sure how arbitration works.

AFAIK, the player comes up with a number and the team comes up with a number. They each make a case for the number they chose and the arbitrator has to pick one or the other.

I am sorry...it has to be one of the Dodgers. Greinke is putting up an unheard of ERA. Advanced stats be damned, he is minimizing actual runs at an insane clip. If you want to go more sabr, then Kershaw is the beast he always is. Hands down it should be one of those two.

Using just WAR, ERA, and FIP.

Greinke: ERA 1.65 FIP 2.77 WAR 5.5

Kershaw ERA 2.18 FIP 2.09 WAR 7.8

Arrieta ERA 1.88 FIP 2.44 WAR 6.7

Clayton Kershaw is the best pitcher in baseball. He should also win the CY Young again.

Looking at the AL

David Price ERA 2.34 FIP 2.76 WAR 6.3

Chris Sale ERA 3.47 FIP 2.67 WAR 6.0

Dallas Keuchel ERA 2.51 FIP 2.89 WAR 5.8

Chris Archer ERA 2.92 FIP 2.74 WAR 5.4

David Price is probably going to win the AL Cy Young. Even with his struggles at times, Sale should be right in the mix though. God the Sox defense is atrocious.

Sale hasn't really helped himself with all the homeruns he's giving up. In September his FIP is 4.68 and he's giving up HR on an insane 26% of his flyballs.

That rate is totally unsustainable. I am sure you personally know but league average is said to be 10%. His 12.1% HR/FB, 71.9% strand rate and .329 BABIP are all his career worst.

I know it's unsustainable, my point was more that the recent barrage of homers he's given up has eliminated a lot of the sabremetrics-advantage he had over the other contenders.

NL -

Arrietta. Kershaw and Greinke kind of cancel each other out in voting. If that makes any sense.

1. Arrietta

2. Greinke

3. Kershaw

AL -

1. Price

2. Keuchel

3. Gray

4. Archer

I love Sale as much as the next poster, but there's no way he finishes top three in Cy voting.

Did you actually look at numbers though? Sale's FIP is higher. He's accumulated more WAR as well. Look at the difference in Sale's ERA and FIP. The White Sox defense is horrible.

I get that the defense sucks, but tough s***. The award honors the player who had the best season on the field, not the player who should have had the best season. I don't mind looking at FIP, but what actually happened on the field should have a higher bearing on the award.

He's not getting the award. It's about him being top 3.

Agreed, I mean look at what happened the other day. Yes, he did get bad luck with Sanchez making an error, but Sale still got rocked after that---hard hit balls, walks, a homer. He had an opportunity to get outs, and he didn't. But no negative impact on his ERA at all. Luck works both ways.
