OP mentioned it. It wouldn't last a week even if they found some way to win 5 Stanley Cups a year, and it wouldn't have anything to do with JR and Rocky being attached at the hip.

The JR/Rocky comment was basically to refute anyone thinking Rocky would ever leave JR high and dry.

And you are right about a Blackhawks network. The Cubs, if they do it, will probably need a partner, and I really don't know who that would be. How can they come up with enough content on a Cubs channel? I guess the winter would be game replay after game replay.

They spent the money because they had the money to spend. That team hasn't ever lost money in the last 10 years. In fact they made almost $80 million in profit last year., which is why they were able to sign Jon Lester. In the four years before that, they had a combined $100 million profit. In 2015 they had $302 million in revenue. The White Sox had $227. The Cubs haven't pulled in that little revenue since 2008.

It's amazing how Theo is great, Maddon is great, the Cubs, the Cubs, the Cubs...

Theo was hired in December 2011.

This is the first year since 2009 the Cubs have won as many games as the 2015 White Sox. Now, the future is promised. No chance of failure. They were 3rd in their division. Their lowest total attendance during this stretch would be top 5 all time for the White Sox.

If the Sox tried using top people at top dollar and it all blew up on them it might wreck profits for years and that's why they never take the risk. Reinsdorf is an expert at risk management.

You make great points..

But I'm not so sure about that last statement..…The checkbook was opened after the 2005 season.. Kenny Williams ran with it and stumbled…Now back to the middling approach and it has officially blown up on him…. The franchise is now in disarray and with record low viewership and relevancy in Chicago..

I guess he's not such an expert after all

To be fair, Theo did come out and basically say at the time, we're gonna suck for 3-4 years so be patient. At least that front office had/has a plan and are on the same page.

This board is seething with Cubs envy.

Theo said they would be bad for a few seasons, he built the best minor league system in baseball, he brought up four rookies to start in one season, and finished with the 3rd most wins in the NL.

Do you have any idea how f***ing bad we all want to be where they are now? They're absolutely incredible. They finished 13 games ahead of the Giants for the wild card. 13 games. They had 97 WINS.

You're darn right the Cubs are great. Maddon is 97 wins great, Theo is 97 wins great, Bryant and Rizzo and the rest of the team are 97 wins great.

And a year ago, Theo was getting ripped left and right. It was reported the Cubs had no money, they spend it all paying down their debt, their TV ratings were horrible... Now nothing in the world is wrong with the Cubs.

Theo said this would happen. He was right. The smart people knew what the plan was.

Ours does, too. They're going to try to remain competitive every year, without ever "going for broke." And it's fine -- the team has zero market-rate financial obligations beyond 2017 and the farm system continues to improve.

The difference is the White Sox don't deliver at all. They're bad every year. They can't draft position players, either.

Think about how lucky Theo got:

He traded for a Cy Young guy at the deadline for an average FA to be.

Samardzija turned down his contract offer which saved him money, and got him Russell.

For some odd reason, Houston didn't draft Bryant, they drafted Apel.

I won't even get into the Rizzo shenanigans.

What if the opposite had happened on even one of these?

The sox aren't moving ever.

They have the chance to own 40% of csn Chicago( provided the Cubs leave to start thier own network), which is shown in almost every cable household in the market. And a rights deal that will expire in 3 seasons, with a projected windfall in tv money in 2020. Not to mention one of the best stadium deals in the game.

We live in an era where paid attendance is a small factor in a teams financial health.
