VAfan
I posted this mostly just to see what happened with that 2012 veteran club. Whether the Sox could have done a lot better trading on those assets is fair discussion. The fact is that we got next to nothing back, and that is a big reason why the Sox are currently in an untenable position. No money to invest in free agents. No position players ever come up from the minors and amount to cornerstone players. The only tradeable assets left at the moment are members of the pitching staff that the Sox have done well to build. Plus, a manager that isn't helping the team. And a front office conflicted between what Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams might want to do.
Vance Law
QUOTE (VAfan @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 08:55 AM) No money to invest in free agents. This, as pointed out multiple times in this thread, is simply the opposite of reality.
ShandyMan
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 9, 2015 -> 10:30 PM) If this hasn't been mentioned, the shedding of 2012 salary/losing players for "nothing" were instrumental in netting us the funds to sign Abreu. This. No need to mention more.
kitekrazy
Certain teams have gotten deals that don't happen to everyone. I don't see any valid points of this OP thread. No one has a crystal ball when it comes to trading players at their highest value. At some point how long do you trade anyone who is good in hopes that getting younger and good shows up? Prospects are the highest risk to trade for in this organization.
Hatchetman
The position players were terrible in 2012 and were still terrible in 2015. That was what I took from it.
Vance Law
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 12:37 PM) The position players were terrible in 2012 I'll assume you meant 2013.
LittleHurt05
The 2012 White Sox had a 2.5 game division lead at the trade deadline. Why would they have broken the team up then? The 2012 Cubs were 19.5 games back on July 31. Why are those two situations comparable at all?
Hatchetman
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 02:40 PM) I'll assume you meant 2013. No I meant 2012. AJ had hit the fountain of youth somehow and Rios had a fluke year. Other than that looks like garbage to me.
bmags
We received Rodon and Fulmer
Jose Abreu
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 03:04 PM) No I meant 2012. AJ had hit the fountain of youth somehow and Rios had a fluke year. Other than that looks like garbage to me. Wasn't a fluke year for Rios, he's had multiple seasons like that. Pierzynski, Konerko, Ramirez, Viciedo, De Aza, Rios, and Dunn all had good years. How is that "terrible"? Jose Abreu
QUOTE (staxx @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 11:54 AM) This. No need to mention more. Yup, I don't know why it's so hard for some to understand. Also, technically, got Tim Anderson out of it too.
Vance Law
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 01:04 PM) No I meant 2012. AJ had hit the fountain of youth somehow and Rios had a fluke year. Other than that looks like garbage to me. So by "the position players were terrible in 2012," you meant "while the position players were very good in 2012, in the future they would eventually be garbage." Hatchetman
DeAza garbage. Viciedo garbage. Youk. Beckham. 36 year old Konerko. Adam Dunn hit .204. Couple guys had unexpectedly good years and the position players were still 16th in WAR.
Vance Law
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 02:28 PM) DeAza garbage. Viciedo garbage. Youk. Beckham. 36 year old Konerko. Adam Dunn hit .204. Couple guys had unexpectedly good years and the position players were still 16th in WAR. I can do this too. De Aza was worth 2.7 WAR. Youkilis put up a .771 OPS with the Sox. Konerko yet another .850 OPS season. Adam Dunn hit 41 home runs, good for 6th best in White Sox history. Rios good for 3.9 WAR. AJ had his best season as a baseball player. #4 team in the AL in runs scored.
Jose Abreu
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 10, 2015 -> 04:28 PM) DeAza garbage. Viciedo garbage. Youk. Beckham. 36 year old Konerko. Adam Dunn hit .204. Couple guys had unexpectedly good years and the position players were still 16th in WAR. You lost credibility right off the bat. Look at their stats and then try and back this up. Notice I didn't include Youk and Beckham because they were the two players who I did not think have good years. Konerko was 36, so what? Still put up good numbers. Dunn hit .204, but had 41 HRs and drew 105 walks. That's what we signed him to do.
GreenSox
2012? That was Youkilis. He was terrific for us.
caulfield12
If Liriano pitched like he would go on to throw from 2013-2015, we might not be having this same conversation.
Hatchetman
16th in WAR for the 2012 white sox position players. BFD. and you had a bunch of guys do way better than was expected and it still wasn't that good.
