I wouldn't mind any of them winning, honestly.

The Royals winning to me just removes the excuse of, "well they sucked for a long time and havent won anything" argument that so many fall upon to justify us avoiding a rebuild. I like their team alot. It also places atleast added pressure when asked the question of, what will you do Hahn for the White Sox to compete against the World Series champion? I think any question that is answered with, "well we believe this team has what it takes to compete" is especially embarrassing. Now it probably won't alter their decision making, but it atleast makes our woes more pronounced.

You know you can rebuild without doing a complete teardown right?

Idiotic.

There was just an article the other day in the Trib or Sun-Times where the writer basically apologized to Bartman for piling on with the rest of the crowd....and then mentioned how through the lawyer they wouldn't confirm or deny he'd been back to any Cubs' games at Wrigley since then, only that he has followed some of the stories from afar about the various curses and found some of the articles funny or amusing.

Rebuild on the fly hasn't worked out too well for us. Mostly becauae we haven't dealt anyone worth a damn. We have to trade players of value to receive value. Sale, Quintana.....those are your rebuild pieces. Now while I'm not advocating a complete tear down, the point was KC winning proves it can effectively be done

I haven't commented much about the Cubs. This did remind me of Showalter's Orioles losing in the playoffs. The genius managers get beat when their players don't produce. Case closed. Maddon couldn't do anything with the Cubs' bats dead. Cubs pretty much got buried. I'd say they were an embarrassment in fact, but I don't care enough about the Cubs to go there.

Maddon's next task is to make sure the Cubs shrug this off. There's no guarantee you win it all (cough cough Detroit) during the window. I'd assume the Cubs will win one or two World Series minimum with this crew and might even have a dynasty if they keep spending money like a big market team and add some pieces. But it sure as hell wouldn't surprise me if they DO NOT win a WS with this crew.

July 31, the Mets were 53-50. They added Cespedes and took off.

Toronto was 53-51. They added Price & Tulo.

Texas was 50-52. They added Hamels.

The Sox were 49-52. They did not add, but it's not inconceivable that Sale would remain dominant, Q would run into some luck and get some wins, and Shark would have a strong second half. If LaRoche, Melky and a few others play to their lifetime averages (which means getting hot for a few months), the Sox aren't as far out of it as they ended up.

Going forward, you have to hope Rodon continues to improve, and maybe Fulmer shows up and is as good as 2015 Rodon. That would put the Sox staff on par with the Mets. If they can add a few dynamic bats, who knows, maybe the Sox make a run next year. Baseball, like football and hockey, seems to be about getting hot toward the end of the season and making a playoff run.

Other than David Wright (who wasn't a huge factor this season) and Cespedes, you don't have a lot of All-Star talent on that offense. It's a bit similar to the Giants' strategy the past 5-7 years.

You have to have ENOUGH offense, though, like the 2005 White Sox.

Not even Top Half of the AL, but certainly not bottom quartile.

It's worth noting they (the White Sox) could have added the likes of Cespedes, Uribe, Kelly Johnson and Murphy had they actually had the will to compete in the second half, but it would have required trading valuable minor league pieces.

It's not like Granderson, Duda, D'Arnaud, Lagares, Flores/Tejada, Cuddyer, etc., are world beaters, but they're solid and most of those guys are at least decent defenders, with the exception of Murphy. Cespedes with his arm is average or a bit above...

Looking through their roster, at Plawecki, Eric Campbell, Lagares...they were pretty brutal offensively, but that's a minority of the roster.

Most importantly, the Mets had both depth and the ability to make trades to supplement their holes.

The White Sox had only two 100+ OPS+ guys among their regulars in Eaton and Abreu.

157 Cespedes

132 Duda and Conforto (platoon guy)

129 Granderson

128 Wright and D'Arnaud

113 BAMiel Murphy

102 Juan Uribe

99 Kelly Johnson

95 Flores/Cuddyer

94 Tejada

That's EIGHT over 100 and FOUR more within the margin of error of being positive offensive contributors. Even Nieuwenhuis was at 90, so 13 competent offensive threats during the course of the year.

The Blue Jays were one of the best teams in baseball even before those moves the results just hadn't caught up to how they were actually playing on the field which happens sometimes in baseball. I do think those trades helped ignite the team on a hot streak though but Toronto even before those moves was significantly more talented than the White Sox. While people like to bring up the Mets adding Cespedes as the reason for the turnaround they really essentially turned over half their lineup at the deadline or around the deadline as they also got Wright back from injury in August, d'Arnaud finally got healthy at that time and they brought up Conforto.

All of the quirky things maddon did in regular season seemed to be exposed in this series as well as the flaws of the team as a whole.

Schwarber made a fool of himself in LF.

The thing is, baseball goes in cycles. You're hot, you cool off. You're cold, you get hot. The Cubs hit all those HRs vs. STL, and then had to face better pitchers, and a little more pressure. Regressing to the mean is eventually going to happen. It happened.

I'm now hearing the spin that this loss will give them some invaluable experience. I'm not buying that. You just can't be great every series, no matter what you supposedly now "know". They had won 12 out of 13 coming in. They were due to take it on the chin.

Cubs end their season on a classy note...of course, it wouldn't have gotten a mention had the White Sox done the exact same thing

Too bad the fans were mostly gone by then.

The Cubs need to flip someone for pitching. If you cannot take advantage of the wind blowing out at Wrigley with a lineup of strikeout or homer guys you may want to bolster that weak rotation. Hammel and Hendricks are not guys you want starting in the playoffs.

Caulfield is trading Baez and Soler straight up for Sale, they will be fine

Where did I say that?

Jesus.

I said Schwarber, Baez and Soler.

Just to pacify you, it was amended to Russell, Schwarber and Baez/Soler. As soon as we ask for Russell instead, that will be the end of the discussion.

And yet quite a few want to trade for 3-4 completely unproven minor leaguers from the Red Sox system that they've never even seen play...and Moncada isn't even one of them.

Schwarber, Baez and Soler for Sale. Probably would have to substitute Castro for Baez or Soler....making the deal a no go but definitely interesting. Maybe we could throw in Avi and Sanchez/Micah to get Soler back.

Ok, you did say Schwarber, but I don't see anything about Russell. So Schwarber, Baez, and Castro for Sale... still a hard pass for the Sox.
