Good...Flowers and Rick Hahn get to use the injury excuse for his poor batting again.

Well his magic glasses fixed his hitting so it must be an injury. Next year we can get him a magic bat with magic batting gloves.

21st in wRC+ amongst catchers with 300+ plate appearances. Dude is a bad hitter for the position too.

But people on this board are hard to please. I was getting fried on this board for saying Salvy Perez was an outstanding catcher for the Royals.

That's not even true greg. I can't find the thread now, but you were saying that Perez was a top offensive catcher and people used statistics to show that many catchers hit better than him. That doesn't mean he's not a great catcher, especially for the price.

Subpar starter with the bat. And the difference between him and the 6 or 8 guys ahead of him is not that much. Catchers suck at hitting across the league. He's considered a top 2 pitch framer in MLB this year. Because you don't have an easy way to quantify and contextualize that extremely important part of catching, you undervalue it. He helps the pitchers be better and more effective. He's an overall averagely valuable catcher.

Tyler Flowers was a better hitter than Perez in 2014. I'll type it again for some reason. Tyler Flowers was a better hitter than Perez in 2014. Perez was a bit better in 2015. Over the past 2 years they've been pretty comparably catcherly with their hitting.

Huh? I never once mentioned anything about Tyler Flowers other than his bat, because that's the only thing that was being debated in this thread. Are we moving the goalposts now?

And I've said time & time again on this board that there is no good way to quantity the true value of a catcher. Pitch framing is just one of many reasons why. Not sure where you get this idea I don't the importance of pitch framing. However, I would argue you're likely undervaluing the impact pitchers themselves have on pitch framing and therefore are overvaluing Flowers.

I've said it before, but if not for the Sox being completely bereft of positional talent, there is a great rationale for moving him.

Enlighten me, because I don't get why you would trade a lead off man when there are so few of them in the game today. Unless you're getting a massive haul of prospects back and rebuilding, I don't see the logic.

They should just DFA flowers and make LaRoche catch next year. That way his bat would play to league average!

That brings up a serious question: could you tell an overpaid, underperforming player that you are going to make him catch if he doesn't retire and save you the money and roster spot. Would that work?

 That's awesome.

I think he'd probably call his agent and you'd have a grievance on your hands.

The way around a grievance could be that you will make him catch without giving him the option of retiring to make it less threatening. That way he can decide he doesn't want to catch an go out on his own
