White Sox decline option on Alexei Ramirez

If he gets less than Bonifacio or Keppinger recently received (for basically doing nothing) to play SS everyday for the White Sox this year, it will be shocking.

Wonder how well that would sit staring at an older LaRoche on the bench making 3 times as much (sitting against lefties) and basically contributing little while he's playing the most important position on the entire field, along with catcher?

Not 34 year olds with declining offensive and defensive production.

In fact, I would say, the over 30 crowd is probably having a harder time getting a big payday than their steroid era counterparts.

Steven Drew just got a five million contract from the Yankees last year after hitting in the .100's for two different teams in 2014.

JJ Hardy turned a .682 OPS into a 3 year deal pushing $40 million. Alexei was .642 this season, and still a way better defender.

You are probably right, that it could be closer to 3-4 M. I presume somewhere in the deal their will be an option for the 2nd year (if he signs with the Sox). In terms of the market, I agree that in general, aging players are having a hard time getting bigger contracts as people are aging more normally (vs. during the steroid era). Both OC and Alexei are good comparisons as neither was ever the best shortstop in baseball, but both were widely viewed as upper echelon guys during chunks of their career. That said, 3-4M puts him at utility costs (of some guys) so I do think he gets a tick more then that (or at least has some incentives that could push the value up).

The other problem Alexei has is the teams who probably would have interest bringing him in, I would think TB, maybe Oakland, don't exactly break the bank with contract offers.

And both teams regret their decision.

By what metric? FanGraphs has him better defensively every year since 2011, and while I know the Gold Glove is a questionable award, Hardy won it 3 straight times from 2012-2014.

Kendrys Morales didn't exactly kill off the value of the 30 something crowd, either.

Or look at how much longer Torii Hunter was effective from an offensive standpoint than anyone expected.

For every Victor Martinez (who quite a few still wanted to sign) or Chone Figgins, there's always going to be some bargains...look no further than the changes in our roster from 2004 to 2005.

Heck, people are talking about Mr. Defensively-Challenged Murphy of the Mets getting $10-12 million and even upwards of $15 million at second base, a seemingly less important position. Alex Rios got $11 million and an option year at roughly the same age and relative production positionally...

Surprised by this move. Alexei was quite HORRIBLE through June last year, but from July through the end of the year, he hit quite well. I expected the Sox to chalk up his poor start to the mental distractions he was dealing with.

If he re-signs on a cheaper deal, though, then it could be a win for the Sox. Even if it's for 2 years. Because if he bounces back, or plays like he did at the end of 2015, he'll have some real trade value. And if not, the Sox shouldn't be locked in for more than the would have been if they'd picked up the option.

He has a higher Dwar than Hardy, even with the horrible start.

I still really wish the Sox would have traded him 2 years ago when his value was high.

they couldn't .... not with JA coming in. that was the wild card.

whether it has any positive results, only someone close to the ball club and to JA will be able to answer that.

They can't honestly think Anderson is ready.. can they?

I don't think they would bring up Anderson to start the year off. We would probably see Sanchez/Saladino at SS with Micah at 2B unless we were to sign a vet in FA and I am not sure if there is even anyone out there. If we are struggling in July and Anderson is doing well in AAA I could see them bringing him up at that point
