They really do need an ace and they could have gone after Jordan Zimmermann who should be cheaper than Price. Then again, I don't know much about the Jays finances either.

I'm quite surprised they didn't go after Samardzija. Maybe Samardzija's asking price is too much?

There's nothing impressive about that rotation when looking beyond Estrada and Stroman. The Jays offense will need to continue mashing to win games.

I've always read that the ownership up there has a ton of money but seem unwilling to spend the big bucks.

#Tigers in discussions with Jordan Zimmermann, sources tell @ken_rosenthal and me, with multiple people saying talks have become serious.

Bring it.

Well that's a little unexpected

As a Sox fan, I feel this would be a wise move for Detroit. Go right ahead and tie up 100M+ in another contract that could become another albatross like Verlander's in a few years. Assuming Zimmermann gets the speculated 6 years. I think Zimmermann could hold his value for another 3 or 4 years but not 6. Go for it Tigers!

Nothing would make me happier then to see the Tigers spend $100+ million on a guy like Zimmermann when they're clearly not good enough to win the division.

Great minds think alike. :)

This is a move I love seeing as a White Sox fan. Let Detoliet sign an older overpriced overrated NL SP from a team that stole theirs, a real AL SP Stud in Scherzer. If they had this $$$ to throw at a guy who to me is an AL #3 or #4 SP at his best, why not splurge and keep Max?

Enjoy this deal Tigers fans. You're paying Verlander, Sanchez & Zimmerman a combined $66 million to pitch in 2016. Their 2 best SPs may end up being Norris and Boyd, 2 guys that don't combine for $2 million in 2016! If the Tigers want to add that 2nd #2 Tier Free Agent SP like Cueto, be my guest.

Maybe they can spend $90 million a year on 4 overrated starting pitchers that best fit in the National League?

At least Detroit tries. Can't fault them for that. We keep talking about well they'll regret it later, meanwhile they'll continue to own us.

The last two years Detroit has gone 20-18 against us, that's not "owning us".

I agree. However, with this new explosion in $$$ going to free agents, makes you wonder if the Sox are hoarding $$$s. How can some teams afford to pay these outlandish contracts? Just makes you wonder if the Sox and all teams still would make money with 200 to 300 million dollar payrolls. I mean before too long somebody's gonna have a billion dollar payroll. This salary escalation is showing no signs of stopping.

sp - Johnny Cueto and the amount he rejected. there are 2 different amounts that was offered, a contract in the 15-18 mil range and another in the 6yrs/120 range. either way, before last yr, i would have sworn that he was in the 25 per range or more. but after last yr performance, i thought the 6/120 is a fair price.

Nah. He'll get more than that.

Any AL team that gives Cueto a 6 year/$120 million or more deal is crazy.

He's way past his prime, especially if he stays in the AL.

Maybe he'd be worth that contract to an NL team, but he was basically like Samardzija in the AL. more like on the sox

a good example.
