Serious talk of Alomar return

As a visiting player, Roberto Alomar had mixed feelings about Chicago.

He wasn't comfortable roaming around downtown. And it felt as if every game he played at Comiskey Park was in a deep freeze.

But Alomar loves Chicago now. And that's why he welcomed White Sox general manager Ken Williams' recent interest in re-signing him for 2004.

"It's real positive," Alomar said, "but it's something I don't want to comment a lot about. I look forward to all those things, and when the year is over, it's going to be the right thing for us.

"I think Kenny is doing a great job. For next year, he's trying to [bring back] almost the same team. I would love to stay here. We're going in the right direction."

At one point, Williams thought he and Alomar were close to agreeing on terms for a one-year extension.

Now it appears that Alomar, who turns 36 in February, will try to get the Sox to bite on a two-year deal.

Alomar is earning $8 million this season, but it's believed he would have to take a significant pay cut to stay with the Sox.

"My agent (Jaime Torres) is the one who's taking care of that," Alomar said. "I wish we can agree to something, but I don't know if it's the right time to be talking about that. We have a goal to reach here and I don't want any distractions—not only for me but for the whole team."

Williams also has made early attempts to re-sign closer Tom Gordon and would love to find a way to keep Bartolo Colon, another pending free agent.

Williams also relishes the intensity and effort that center fielder Carl Everett has brought to the team. But in part because the Sox have so many other options in center (Aaron Rowand, Willie Harris, Joe Borchard), Everett would have to agree to a sharp reduction from his $9.15 million salary.

I agree, both Alomars should stay.

Sandy will help develop Olivo and gives you a good reliable backup catcher.

Two years for Robbie does not bother me AT ALL.

After all, I have SEEN D'Angelo Jiminez...and it was NOT good.

I have seen Willie Harris....and it was NOT good.

ALOMAR BROTHERS MUST STAY!! :headbang

Agreed. I'd bring back both Alomar brothers and would probably see Everett go, soley for monetary reasons. Then bring back the entire rest of the team. Daubach will probably go and I'd probably lose Jose if they have the option. But he'll probably get his option to vest and we'll be stuck with him.

I like Jose, but at 5 mill, thats a big hold up, imo.

who else can play 2nd for us?

let alone half as well as an older Robbie?

I never liked him when he was with the Tribe (cuz he beat us too much) but he has been very good for us so I'd keep him

Alomar Sr played for us, Alomar Jr will undoubtedly stay with us as a coach when he retires as a player, so keeping Robbie is kind of a family thing -

On another thread bf I saw that some1 said that DJ's numbers in Cinci were slightly better than Robbie's with da Sox. That is the craziest thing I've heard this year as a Sox Fan. Robbie brings character, leadership, a vereran influence, some1 who can actully BUNT, and some Swagger. All DJ brings is a pillow for when he takes nights off lying down in the Infield.
