That would be terrible. Give up too many future pieces to put together a team that will finish at best third in the division and take on way too much salary to be able to spend money to improve the roster or the farm. If you are planning on rolling with a platoon of Avila and Navarro next season you are not planning on building a contender.

Doubt that package even sniffs Frazier. Reds have no real reason to trade him this offseason in the 1st place, but if they do there will plenty of competition because of the lack of other 3B available. And I still can't understand why people want to give up assets for a guy who isn't very good away from Cors and is owed $20M in '17. No thanks on Cargo unless they are chipping in a good chunk of change for '17 and aren't looking for much in return.
rowand's rowdies
Am I crazy to think about buying low on Big Game James Shields? Word is Padres are looking to move him. 3 years $63 Million left. Even crazier, what if instead of lower level prospects or eating $ we just send the Padres back a NL calibur starting pitcher in Johnny Danks and his 1/$13, a 1B rental who can be flipped if he has a decent year in Laroache and his 1/$13. What prospects would it take to make that work? Would cost the Padres an extra $5 million in 2016 but saves them $42 Million between 2017 and 2018. Meanwhile the White Sox can afford that contract for an AL caliber (excluding 2015, I know) pitcher, albeit an aging and declining one. Would give the White Sox time to move Fulmer slowly, not have to depend on Erik Johnson to be more than a #5, and some real SP balance and depth for the next 3 years. Then you can work on the offense, I'm still not for trading Q in that scenario. This is just a fun suggestion, it's the off-season. Have fun with it or ignore it, not meant to be taken too seriously. OmarComing25
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Dec 3, 2015 -> 02:35 PM) If you are planning on rolling with a platoon of Avila and Navarro next season you are not planning on building a contender. Why? Steamer has the Avila/Navarro duo projected for a combined 2.5 WAR next year, which would have been the 9th best WAR from the catching spot in the MLB this season. The vast majority of catchers suck.

Bigsoxhurt35
I just can't get behind that lineup because it depends on big bounce back years from LaRoche and Melky. Then ya need Trayce to produce or its all gone to s*** again if they all don't produce. I do think LaRoche should bounce back. How well? Not expecting 40 bombs but 25 would be good. I really like CarGo because he shouldn't break our system like Frazier would. Montas + would be fine with me. TheFutureIsNear
Can Yunel Escobar even play SS anymore? I know he was decent early in his career, but he was the worst defensive SS in the league in '14 and didn't play the positional at all this past year. Not sure he could be penciled in at SS next year unless there was a reason for his really bad D in '14 that I'm not aware of
LDF
i believe this was mention on a shopping list of some kind for the sox to do or need to address. i like the idea of a closer / rp .... esp with my fiasco this morning on Holland. well in the FA market i have been reading about closer - Steve Cishek. if the cost isn't too much, why not, he is right handed and has had success as a closer... ok last yr was a bad yr... but still. See for yourself. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/alvarpe01.shtml Alvarez would have Sox fans missing Gillaspie in no time. it's actually worse than that. During his last season at 3b in 2014, Alvarez developed a case of the "yips". Every time he got an easy ground ball where he had time to think about the throw, he airmailed the throw 20 feet to the right of 1b. A fast play where he didn't have time to think he could still handle, but every easy play went into the stands for about a month before they gave up and stopped playing him there. It's not even a matter of him being bad any more, it's Chuck Knoblauch/Steve Sax syndrome. You literally cannot put him at 3b any more. He will not just be bad, he will lose you every game where there is a ground ball right to him.

I know we're a long shot but the sox can afford Jason Heyward. Sox payroll last year was nearly 119M. Even with the dead money of Bonifacio and Alexei's buy out in addition to LaRoche 16M in total [who i think you could move in a bad contract swap; like Papelbon or move for 8-9M on his contract] if you added in Heyward at 20M a year the payroll increase is only about 3M for this year (still needing to fill 3B & SS) and then it drops back down to 104 going into '17. Looking at the next two free agent classes when it comes to hitters and leaving out Harper, if there were ever a free agent to spend money on its Heyward.
